Why Are Netflix and Indie Film Crews Flocking to Blackpool?

by Jason Smith

Even though there are several popular filming opportunities around the UK, what’s fascinating is that more and more people are flocking to Blackpool. Two major filming projects are currently drawing attention to the town in 2025.

Who is Filming in Blackpool?

Film crews from Netflix have been spotted filming at Blackpool’s iconic landmarks. This includes the Tower Festival Headland and Blackpool Tower. The shoot took place in February, with locals flocking to watch the development unfold. The project is said to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Otomo, with more to be released at a later date.

Eddie, an independent movie, has also been spotted filming on Blackpool Promenade. London-based company, Rogue Films, which is known for creating music videos for a number of global brands, including Foo Fighters and Adele, has been filming on Central Pier.

This is a self-funded venture and is being produced by Maddy Easton. Even though this is a much smaller production, the project’s presence in Blackpool is helping to highlight the town’s growing popularity as a filming destination for both indie productions as well as large-scale blockbusters.

Blackpool not only has a long coastline, but also piers and the local town appeal. With railway lines that run through it and the iconic Blackpool tower, it’s not hard to see why it is becoming a premier destination for filmmakers who want their movie to have a small-town feel.

Blackpool is Illuminating under the Spotlight

Blackpool is showing time and time again that it has a growing reputation as a film and entertainment hub. It’s no surprise either, especially when you look at the extensive range of attractions and iconic locations. Outside of filming, Blackpool is a well known entertainment hub. The Escape Room at the Blackpool Tower Dungeon is an immersive adventure that is helping to put the seaside town on the map.

Digital experiences are also helping to put the spotlight on Blackpool. Train Sim World has released the Blackpool Branches DLC, which covers the railway lines that link Blackpool to Preston. Even iGaming is helping to boost the visibility of Blackpool. Due to its fame as an entertainment destination, if you play internet bingo UK, you may notice that some providers are running promotional bingo events that allow you to win a stay at the All Star Hotel in Blackpool. If you want to qualify, enter the code each week and stake £15 on bingo to be in with a chance of winning.

Even though Netflix is filming in Blackpool, and promotions like this certainly help to put the town on the map, the increase in tourism also has a part to play in the town’s recent popularity. According to the BBC, Blackpool saw 21.5 million visitors in 2023, which is a 6% increase compared to the year before. This just goes to show that even though more and more filming companies are choosing Blackpool as their destination, a lot of other things are helping to contribute to Blackpool’s sudden rise in popularity, and it is very interesting to see how trends like this affect the local economy.
