Channel 4 has unveiled the trailer for ‘Summerwater’, a gripping and atmospheric new drama based on Sarah Moss’s acclaimed novel, arriving this November.
Set against the backdrop of a remote loch-side holiday cabin park in the Scottish Highlands, the six-part series unfolds over the course of a single, rain-soaked summer’s day. What begins as an ordinary getaway gradually builds into a haunting portrait of modern Britain, as simmering tensions between holidaymakers boil over into a devastating climax.
Each episode follows a different perspective, weaving together the private worlds of families and couples who share the same patch of wilderness. From restless kids and bickering parents to lonely lovers and reminiscing pensioners, ‘Summerwater’ paints an unflinching yet compassionate picture of how fragile civility can be when the weather, and tempers, refuse to settle.
Described as a thrilling and compulsive study of nature, class, family and the pursuit of fleeting happiness, the drama explores the bonds and fractures that define community in divided times.
The ensemble cast includes Dougray Scott (Crime, My Week With Marilyn), Shirley Henderson (Bridget Jones, Harry Potter), Valene Kane (Blue Lights, Gangs of London), Arnas Fedaravicius (The White Lotus S3, The Last Kingdom), Anna Próchniak (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Showtrial), and Gabriel Scott (Masters of the Air, House of the Dragon). They’re joined by Shereen Cutkelvin (Crime, Vigil), Anders Hayward (Vigil, Guilt), James Harkness (The Victim, Lockerbie), Daniel Rigby (Black Mirror, Landscapers), Shauna Macdonald (Shetland, Outlander), and Jamie Sives (Dept. Q, Guilt).
Adapted by John Donnelly (The Pass, Utopia) and directed by Robert McKillop (Guilt, Ludwig) and Fiona Walton (Rebus, Shetland), ‘Summerwater’ is the debut production from Glasgow-based indie Freedom Scripted, with Mike Ellen as Executive Producer and Jules Hussey (Ralph & Katie, You Don’t Know Me, Guilt) as Series Producer. The project is produced in association with All3Media International and supported by Screen Scotland.
