ABC is keeping its high-stakes emergency drama universe alive for another year, handing renewals to both ‘9-1-1’ and its newer spinoff ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ for the 2026–27 TV season.
The flagship series will return for a 10th season, while ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ has been picked up for Season 2, extending the franchise that originally launched on Fox before moving to ABC in 2024.
The decision is hardly surprising when you look at the numbers. Both shows sit comfortably in the Top 10 dramas among Adults 18–49 across seven-day multi-platform viewing, with ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ currently ranking as the No.1 new drama on US television in the demo.
‘9-1-1’ continues to be one of ABC’s biggest scripted hits, pulling in huge audiences with its mix of character drama and spectacular large-scale rescue set pieces. The series stars Angela Bassett (Black Panther, American Horror Story) as LAPD sergeant Athena Grant, and remains one of the network’s most expensive productions thanks to its action-heavy emergencies and Los Angeles shooting schedule.
The show has already weathered some behind-the-scenes changes in recent seasons, including the departure of co-lead Peter Krause (Six Feet Under, Parenthood), which helped reduce above-the-line costs for the long-running drama.
Meanwhile, ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ has had a slightly bumpier ride. The spinoff launched strongly but saw ratings dip during the autumn portion of its first season. However, after some creative adjustments and a retooling of the show, the series found new momentum early in the year. A late January episode delivered series highs in both total viewers and the key demo, helping cement its chances of a renewal.
ABC and producing studio 20th Television are also said to be keen to continue working with franchise veteran Rashad Raisani (The Night Agent), who serves as co-creator, executive producer and showrunner on ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ and recently renewed his overall deal with the studio.
UK viewers are already familiar with the original ‘9-1-1’, which airs on Disney+ in the UK. The spinoff ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ is expected to follow the same route, although a confirmed UK broadcaster or streaming home for the series has not yet been officially announced.
