‘High Potential’ Season 3 Finds New Showrunners As ‘Poker Face’ Duo Take Over

by Dave Elliott

ABC’s hit crime drama High Potential is getting a new brain behind the brain, as Nora and Lilla Zuckerman have been named executive producers and showrunners for the upcoming third season.

The Zuckerman sisters take over from Todd Harthan, who stepped down after running the first two seasons of the 20th Television-produced series to focus on developing a Disney+ series based on the Eragon books alongside Todd Helbing and Marc Webb. Which is fair enough. If you are going to leave Morgan Gillory’s chaotic genius behind, dragons are at least a reasonably dramatic alternative.

It is a pretty high-profile handover too, as the duo previously served as showrunners on the award-winning first season of Poker Face, and recently wrote and executive-produced Hulu’s Buffy: New Sunnydale pilot, which ultimately did not move forward.

Created by Drew Goddard and based on the French series Haut Potentiel Intellectuel, ‘High Potential’ stars Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Morgan Gillory, a single mum with an exceptional mind whose ability to solve crimes leads her into an unusual partnership with LAPD detective Adam Karadec, played by Daniel Sunjata (Graceland).

“We are so grateful to be working with Craig, Karey, Simran and our partners at 20th and ABC on this exciting new chapter of High Potential,” Lilla and Nora Zuckerman said. “The fact we get to collaborate with Drew, Sarah and Andrea at Goddard Textiles and the incomparable Kaitlin Olson is a dream come true. We’re looking forward to climbing into the brilliant, bustling mind of Morgan Gillory and crafting intricate mysteries worthy of her genius.”

The change comes after a strong second season for ‘High Potential’, which has become one of ABC’s biggest broadcast performers. Season to date, the series is averaging over 16 million total multiplatform viewers, ranking as the third most-watched broadcast series in that category and number one among Adults 18-49. The Season 2 premiere rose to 21.48 million total viewers after 35 days across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and digital platforms.

Alongside Olson and Sunjata, the Season 2 cast included Javicia Leslie (Batwoman), Deniz Akdeniz (The Flight Attendant), Amirah J (Shameless), Matthew Lamb (Only Murders in the Building), and Judy Reyes (Scrubs), with Steve Howey (Shameless) joining for Season 2 on a one-year deal. Given where Season 2 left things, his status may be of particular interest to viewers heading into the new run, although there has been no official confirmation yet on whether he will return.

Season 3 will be executive produced by Goddard and Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, and Olson, with Andrea Massaro of Goddard Textiles serving as co-executive producer.

High Potential’ Season 3 does not yet have a UK premiere date. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Disney+ in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.

Good, season two was largely nothing near as good as season one.
