BBC Acquires ‘Ghosts Australia’ For BBC iPlayer & BBC Three

by Dave Elliott

The Button House lot may have moved on, but the BBC clearly isn’t done with dead people hanging around stately homes, as the broadcaster has acquired Ghosts Australia, the eight-part Aussie adaptation of the much-loved British comedy.

Coming soon to BBC iPlayer and BBC Three, ‘Ghosts Australia’ follows young couple Kate and Sean, who inherit Ramshead Manor after the timely death of Kate’s great-uncle. Heading out to the country to inspect the rather dilapidated property, they begin debating whether to uproot their city lives and turn the place into a boutique hotel. Unfortunately for them, and very fortunately for us, Ramshead Manor is already home to an eclectic group of ghosts…

The series stars Logie-nominated actors Tamala (Cleverman, Nowhere Boys) as Kate, and Rowan Witt (Totally Completely Fine, Book Of Mormon) as Sean. The ghostly ensemble includes Mandy McElhinney (Love Child, House of Hancock), Brent Hill (Hamilton, School of Rock), Ines English (Last Days of the Space Age, The Last Anniversary), Michelle Brasier (Thank God You’re Here, Aunty Donna), George Zhao (The Family Law, Gold Diggers) and Jackson Tozer (Ricky Stanicky, Deadloch).

“It’s a fresh and very fun spin of the wheel for this beloved BBC format. Fans will really enjoy the world this new ghoulish gang create,” said Nick Lee, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition.

‘Ghosts Australia’ is directed by Christiaan Van Vuuren (Top End Bub, A Sunburnt Christmas) and Madeleine Dyer (Colin from Accounts, Austin). The series was written by Josh Mapleston (Surviving Summer), with script editor and writer Libby Butler (Surviving Summer, Neighbours) alongside writers Shontell Ketchell (Gold Diggers), Philip Tarl Denson (Zero-Point) and Steph Tisdell (Fisk, Rosehaven).

The comedy is produced by Bree-Anne Sykes (Critical Incident, Wellmania) and executive produced by Sophia Zachariou (Ladies in Black, The Office Australia), Kylie Washington, EVP and Creative Director BBC Studios ANZ, Paramount ANZ Head of Scripted and Comedy Sophia Mogford.

Produced by BBC Studios Australia Productions, with investment from Screenwest and the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive, ‘Ghosts Australia’ is based on the original British series ‘Ghosts’, produced by Monumental Television in association with Them There for BBC iPlayer and BBC One. The Australian version originally premiered on Paramount+ in Australia, with BBC Studios handling global sales.

Ghosts Australia’ Season 1 will premiere soon on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three in the UK. If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
