Fans of ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ have finally done what broadcasters never quite managed, bringing Gary Sparrow back for the Series 7 that never happened, albeit this time on the printed page. Original creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran are returning to their time-travelling sitcom with ‘Goodnight Sweetheart: Many Happy Returns’, a brand new 337-page novel which picks up where the 2016 reunion special left off. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, the book will get a full retail release in October through Idiot Box Books.
The original ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ ran on BBC One from 1993 to 1999, starring Nicholas Lyndhurst (Only Fools and Horses) as Gary Sparrow, the accidental time traveller who found himself bouncing between 1990s London and wartime Britain, while also juggling two wives in two different eras. Across six series, that increasingly complicated double life gave the sitcom plenty of opportunities to play with history, hindsight and Gary’s rather flexible approach to fidelity.
The sitcom returned in 2016 for a one-off special, also titled ‘Many Happy Returns’, as part of the BBC’s Landmark Sitcom Season. That episode moved Gary’s story forward into 1962 and looked very much like it was setting up a new run. Despite the enthusiastic response, Series 7 never materialised.
So, the fans stepped in. When Idiot Box Books launched a Kickstarter for the continuation in 2025, it asked for £30,000 to make the project happen. A total of 643 backers ultimately pledged £37,021, clearing the target and allowing Marks and Gran to finally continue the story they had planned after the 2016 special. Backers also received early copies and a range of campaign rewards, with some even getting the chance to have themselves or a loved one named as a character in the book.
The novel begins in 1962, with Gary facing a fairly significant problem. The Beatles are about to arrive and revolutionise popular music, which is awkward when you’ve spent the previous two decades passing off their songs as your own. His solution is, naturally, to try and persuade Brian Epstein to give up on the Fab Four before they become famous.
That isn’t Gary’s only problem. After Phoebe casually reveals at a Noel Coward party that her husband was a spy during the war, the comment catches the attention of Ian Fleming. Fleming really did work in intelligence, has never heard of Gary Sparrow, and begins wondering whether Gary might have been working for the wrong side.
Then things get even more complicated when a freak event sends Gary back to 2016. There he discovers that Yvonne was pregnant when he became trapped in the past, meaning he now has a teenage daughter, Ellie, who has no idea he is her father. Gary wants to get to know her, but Yvonne is rather less enthusiastic about the idea.
Marks and Gran said they were delighted to revisit the characters. Their full statement reads:

Now ‘Sweeties’ all over the world have come together (in an incredible crowdfunding effort) to encourage us to continue Gary Sparrow’s story into the 1960s. It’s been a joy to revisit our beloved characters and we’re hugely grateful to everyone who has supported the book.“
The successful campaign has effectively allowed the audience to commission the next chapter of ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ themselves. The novel is fully licensed by Fremantle Media and serves as the Series 7 that might have been, using the ideas, plots and character developments Marks and Gran had intended to explore had another television series been commissioned.
The launch has already brought some of the ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ family back together too. More than 50 fans attended a private event at The Royal Oak in Bethnal Green earlier this month, the filming location for the show’s 1940s setting. Marks and Gran were joined by Christopher Ettridge (Goodnight Sweetheart), who played Reg Deadman, and David Benson (Goodnight Sweetheart), who played Noel Coward, with Ettridge also performing a reading from the book. One particularly dedicated fan even travelled from Melbourne, Australia, for the event.
Alongside the £22 paperback, an eBook and audiobook will be available exclusively through Idiot Box Books, with the audio edition narrated by Christopher Ettridge (Goodnight Sweetheart). The paperback will also be available from retailers including Amazon, Waterstones and WHSmith.
For fans who backed the project, the whole thing is also a rather lovely example of crowdfunding doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Instead of waiting indefinitely for a broadcaster to revisit the sitcom, the audience proved there was enough demand to make a continuation viable and helped put Gary Sparrow back into circulation.
