Geektown Awards – Most Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie Of 2018

And finally… We come to the Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie the Geektowners are looking forward to in 2018. Whilst I think the winner of the ‘Game’ category was pretty much a foregone conclusion, the ‘Movie’ category was incredibly close right up until the end of voting. The ‘TV’ category also gave us a winner that we really didn’t expect! Here are the final three categories you voted on.

Most Anticipated TV Series Of 2018

Nominees: Absentia, Castle Rock, DC’s Black Lightning, DC’s Krypton, DC’s Titans, Instinct, Lost In Space, Marvel’s The Runaways, Mayans MC, SEAL Team, The Umbrella Academy

Bronze: Castle Rock

Silver: Marvel’s The Runaways

And the Gold goes to…

Lost In Space

Lost In Space - 2018

Lost In Space – 2018

Have to say, we did not see that coming, but ‘Lost In Space’ was a clear winner, with a 3% lead over second place ‘Marvel’s The Runaways’. It just goes to show you, Netflix, who are making the reboot of the classic 60’s show, really know what they are doing! Taking its cues from the original 60’s series, Lost In Space centres around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Stars Toby Stephens (‘Black Sails’) as father & commander John Robinson, Molly Parker (‘House of Cards’) as mother & biochemist Maureen Robinson, and Parker Posey (‘Search Party’) as Dr Smith.

Should also note that the Silver and Bronze winners ‘The Runaways’ and ‘Castle Rock’ don’t, as yet, have UK broadcasters, so if you’re reading this and you’re in UK TV acquisitions, you might want to get on that!

Most Anticipated Game Of 2018

Nominees: Detroit: Become Human, Far Cry 5, Spider-Man PS4, Psychonauts 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Sea of Thieves, The Last Of Us 2

Bronze: Far Cry 5

Silver: The Last Of Us 2

And the Gold goes to…

Red Dead Redemption 2

Weirdly, for the first time, due to gaming development times and release dates getting shifted, the ‘Most Anticipated Game Of 2018’ was also the ‘Most Anticipated Game Of 2017’ too! However, it’s no surprise. ‘Red Dead Redemption’ was one of the most beloved games Rockstar has made outside of the GTA franchise. A massive open wild-west world where you can ride horses, have gun fights, and take in some spectacular scenery, all from the comfort of your couch.

Officially Rockstar hasn’t given a release date, but rumours are that it’s likely to turn up mid-2018. We will have to wait and see!

Most Anticipated Movie Of 2018 (that isn’t Star Wars…)

Nominees: Ant-Man and the Wasp, Aquaman, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Deadpool 2, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Ready Player One, The Incredibles 2, Tomb Raider, Venom

Bronze: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Silver: Avengers: Infinity War

And the Gold goes to…

Deadpool 2

This was such a close fight between ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Deadpool 2’ with barely 1% separating the vote, but The Merc With A Mouth finally came out on top. ‘Deadpool’ was the film that proved your comic book adaptations don’t have to be PG13/12A rated. Not only was it brilliantly funny and full of great action sequences, but Ryan Reynolds was born to play this role. Much as we’re looking forward to seeing Thanos take apart the Avengers, more Deadpool is what we really want. Plus who knows… If the Disney/Fox deal gets ratified by the US Government, we may have them all in one movie at some point!

Roll on 2018. It’s going to be one heck of a year in entertainment!
