J.J. Abrams is returning to sci-fi tv with a brand new show called ‘Demimonde‘ at HBO it has been announced today.
Although Abrams’ production company Bad Robot has been responsible for a number of dramas in recent years, i.e. ‘Westworld’, ‘Person of Interest’ and ‘11.22.63’, ‘Demimonde’ marks the first time since ‘Fringe’ Abrams himself has been involved in the creation of a series. In fact, this new series is the first time since ‘Alias’ Abrams has been the sole creator of a tv show.
Details are scarce on the new drama, other than it is described as “an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama” which “centres around a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force.” For those of you wondering on the origins of the title, ‘Demimonde’ is a french word which literally translates to “half-world”, so make of that what you will! We do also know that HBO has given the show a straight-to-series order.
When the script landed on the market, it raised a lot of interest from various broadcasters. Apple were said to be extremely keen, but it was ultimately HBO who won out. The US premium service is already home to the Bad Robot show ‘Westworld‘ and their upcoming adaptation of Matt Ruff’s dark fantasy horror novel ‘Lovecraft Country‘, so it would seem like the natural fit, given their existing relationship.
Although we don’t have any idea of a UK air date (or US air date) for ‘Demimonde‘ yet, as with all HBO shows, it should appear on Sky Atlantic in the UK when it does air. Abrams does have that small issue of making the next ‘Star Wars’ movie as well though, so it could be a while!
We’ll keep you updated when we know more.
