Adaptation Of Scott Westerfeld’s ‘Midnighters’ Novels In The Works At CW From ‘Blindspot’ Team

The CW has put into development an adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s ‘Midnighters’ novels, from ‘Blindspot’ co-exec producer Chris Pozzebon, and creator/EP Martin Gero it has been announced.

The story follows an estranged brother and sister, who on their 29th birthday, discover they are Midnighters, part of a chosen few, born at midnight, who have access to a magical 25th hour each day. Whilst they can use this extra magical hour for fun or gain an advantage in their life, they ultimately learn their destiny is to protect the world from an ancient evil that has been trapped inside the 25th hour for centuries and is about to break free…

Chris Pozzebon, who served as writer and co-EP on ‘Blindspot’, is set to write the script according to Deadline who broke the news. His previous work also includes sitcom ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and Candian drama ‘Open Heart’. Pozzebon will EP the series alongside ‘Blindspot’ creator Martin Gero, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo for Alloy Entertainment, who produce the drama with Warner Bros. TV. This is the second show Gero has in development at The CW along with the female-led remake of 70’s martial arts/western series ‘Kung Fu’, which he is developing with Berlanti Productions.

This will be the third time WB has attempted to make ‘Midnighters’ into a tv drama since acquiring the license 14yrs ago. The first attempt came from Brad Kern, the EP of the original ‘Charmed’ in 2005. After that didn’t move forward ‘Chuck’ creators Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz made a second attempt in 2012, but that version didn’t make it past a script. We’ll have to see if third times a charm for this adaptation.

The potential ‘Midnighters’ series is only “in development” at the moment, so may not move forward. We’ll let you know if and when we hear more.
