Sky Atlantic Releases July UK Premiere Date & New Trailer For ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ Starring Natalie Dormer

Sky has released a new trailer and announced a July UK premiere date for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a “spiritual descendant” of the original Showtime series.

From Tony and Golden Globe winner and three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (‘Skyfall’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘Gladiator’), comes this ten-part drama series, premiering on Sky Atlantic & NOW TV this July. The show opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto – ‘Here and Now’, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane – ‘The Producers’, ‘Modern Family’, ‘The Good Wife’) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

The drama explores an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of the period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.

‘Game Of Thrones’ star Natalie Dormer plays Magda, a supernatural demon who can take the form of anyone she chooses. She’s described as “Charismatic, clever and chameleonic, Magda is a dangerous enemy and an invaluable ally.”

Alongside Zovatto, Lane and Dormer the series regular cast includes ‘Penny Dreadful’ star Rory Kinnear (‘Years and Years’) who takes on a new role as Peter Craft, a German paediatrician and the head of the German-American Bund, an organisation he hopes will keep the United States isolated from the growing threat of war in Europe; Michael Gladis (‘Mad Men’) stars as Charlton Townsend, a councilman and head of the LA City Council’s Transportation Committee; Kerry Bishé (‘Halt and Catch Fire’, ‘Narcos’) plays Sister Molly, a charismatic radio evangelist; Adriana Barraza (‘The Strain’) that the roles of Maria Vega, the matriarch of the Vega family, with Johnathan Nieves (‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Better Call Saul’) plays Mateo Vega, Tiago’s younger brother, with Jessica Garza (‘The Purge’, ‘Six’) as the youngest child, Josefina Vega.

Recurring cast includes Oscar and Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner Amy Madigan (‘Fringe’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Carnivàle’) as Adelaide Finnister, Molly’s mother; Brent Spiner (‘Star Trek’s Data) as Ned Vanderhoff, police captain and Vega and Michener’s boss; Lin Shaye (‘Insidious’ franchise) as Dottie Minter, a friend to Michener; Piper Perabo (‘Covert Affairs’, ‘Coyote Ugly’) plays Peter’s wife, Linda Craft;  And Ethan Peck (‘Star Trek: Discovery’) as Hermann Ackermann, second-in-command at the German-American Bund. Thomas Kretschmann (‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Berlin Station’), Dominic Sherwood (‘Shadowhunters’), Lorenza Izzo (‘Feed the Beast’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’) and Adam Rodriguez (‘CSI: Miami’, ‘Empire’, ‘Criminal Minds’) also star.

Original series creator, writer and executive producer John Logan returns in those same roles for ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels‘. Michael Aguilar also exec produces, alongside Oscar winner Sam Mendes (‘American Beauty’, ‘Skyfall’) and Pippa Harris (‘Revolutionary Road’) for Neal Street Productions. Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions produce the series, and James Bagley serves as co-executive producer. Paco Cabezas (‘The Alienist’) directed multiple episodes along with Sheree Folkson (‘Call the Midwife’, ‘American Horror Story’).

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels‘ Season 1 premieres Wednesday, 1st July 2020 on Sky Atlantic & NOW TV. If you’re in America, the drama airs Sunday, April 26 at 10/9c on Showtime.
