‘Narcos: Mexico’ Renewed For Season 3 With New Showrunner

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has today announced that Narcos: Mexico has been renewed for a 3rd Season, but will have a few changes both in front of, and behind the cameras.

Narcos: Mexico’ continued from the huge success of the original ‘Narcos’ series, moving the drama from Columbia to explore the origins of the modern drug war in Mexico. Season 1 began at a time when Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers and followed the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s. Diego Luna starred as Félix Gallardo, boss of the Guadalajara Cartel, whilst Michael Peña took the role of DEA agent Kiki Camarena, the man trying to stop him.

Season 2 continued the story, with Scoot McNairy (‘Halt and Catch Fire’, ‘Godless’) taking the lead on the DEA side as Agent Walt Breslin, who was now hot on the tail of Gallardo, now the Godfather of the Guadalajara cartel but was struggling to maintain control of his grow his empire.

(WARNING – SEASON 2 SPOILERS BELOW)

One of the big changes in front of the cameras for Season 3 shouldn’t come as a huge shock if you have finished Season 2, which ended with Luna’s Félix Gallardo being sent to prison for his drug trafficking crimes. There had been speculation that Luna would not be returning should the series get renewed, not only due to Gallardo being locked away, but also because the actor is due to reprise his Star Wars ‘Rogue One’ role as Cassian Andor in a series for Disney+.

Netflix has now confirmed that the speculation was correct, and Luna will not return, as Season 3 examines the war that breaks out after Felix’s empire splinters. As newly independent cartels struggle to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins emerge. But in this war, truth is the first casualty – and every arrest, murder and take-down only pushes real victory further away.

Behind the cameras, longtime ‘Narcos’ showrunner Eric Newman will be handing over the reins of the series to focus on other upcoming projects for Netflix where he has an overall deal. He is leaving the series in good hands though, as co-creator and EP Carlo Bernard will step in to take the show forward from Season 3.

“I am grateful for my five years at the helm of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico and am immensely proud of what this spectacular team has achieved with these shows,” commented Newman. “Carlo Bernard is the first person I ever spoke to about this project, over ten years ago, and I am extremely pleased to leave the steering of Season 3 of Narcos: Mexico in his very capable hands.”

An additionally little interesting bit of information is that Wagner Moura, who played Pablo Escobar in the original ‘Narcos‘ will be returning to the show, albeit behind the camera, as he is set to direct two episodes of the upcoming season. On-screen, Scoot McNairy, José Maria Yazpik, Alberto Ammann, Alfonso Dosal, Mayra Hermosillo, Matt Letscher, Manuel Masalva, Alejandro Edda and Gorka Lasaosa are all set to return for Season 3.

There is no premiere date for ‘Narcos: Mexico‘ Season 3 yet, but you can catch up on Seasons 1 & 2, along with the original ‘Narcos’ seasons on Netflix UK and worldwide right now.
