Geektown Awards – Most Anticipated TV Show, Game & Film Of 2021

We now come to the final three categories of the day – ‘Most Anticipated TV Show, Game & Film Of 2021’. With so many movies and shows affected by the pandemic last year, 2021 will see a massive influx of new entertainment for you to watch and play.

We do have one final category to announce which is what you voted your ‘Top Ten Favourite TV Shows Of All Time’, however, we will be announcing that on the Geektown Radio podcast next week, so make sure you tune in on Tuesday! Now on to the next awards!

Most Anticipated Film Of 2021

Nominees: A Quiet Place 2, Black Widow, Dune, Ghostbusters, Morbius, No Time to Die, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Eternals, The Matrix 4, The Suicide Squad, Top Gun: Maverick, Uncharted, Untitled Spider-Man Sequel, Wonder Woman 1984

Bronze: Top Gun: Maverick

Silver: No Time to Die

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: The Matrix 4

Given the number of superhero movies in the list this year, the top three places turned out to be a really interesting mix, as people voted for nostalgia! Coming out top was ‘The Matrix 4’, which sees Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss return as Neo and Trinity in a 4th part of the saga, under the direction of Lana Wachowski.

Not a huge amount is yet known about the film, which given it is currently scheduled for release in December 2021, is a bit of a surprise! It was also originally scheduled for a 2022 release, but was moved up at a time when everything else was being moved back! Alongside Neo and Trinity, Daniel Bernhardt is set to reprise his role as Agent Johnson, along with Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, and (possibly) Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian.

New cast includes Abdul-Mateen II (‘Watchmen’, ‘Aquaman’), Neil Patrick Harris (‘How I Met Your Mother’), Jonathan Groff (‘Mindhunter’, ‘Frozen’), Andrew Lewis Caldwell (‘iZombie’), Ellen Hollman (‘Spartacus’), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (‘Quantico’), and the wonderful Stephen Graham (‘This Is England’, ‘Save Me’, ‘Line of Duty’). Additionally, for ‘Sense8’ fans, Lana has also roped in Brian J Smith, Toby Onwumere and Eréndira Ibarra.

‘The Matrix 4’ is currently filming and due for release 22 December 2021 in cinemas worldwide, along with HBO Max in the USA.

Most Anticipated Game Of 2021

Nominees: Beyond Good & Evil 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite, Hitman 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Kerbal Space Program 2, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Bronze: Halo Infinite

Silver: Hogwarts Legacy

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Cyberpunk 2077

Now, I know some of you will be thinking “I’ve played this already”, however, the eligibility period for the awards runs from 1st December 2019 to 30th November 2020, so ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ falls into the ‘Most Anticipated’ category rather than the ‘Game Of The Year’ category. Having said that, due to a… shall we say… rough… launch… a number of people out there will be still anticipating a version of the game they can actually play…

Personally, I played through the entire game on PC, which seemed to have avoided most of the issues facing console players, and it is fabulous. The open-world, action-adventure story is set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw who is roped into the heist of a one-of-a-kind implant… but as you probably expect, things don’t quite go to plan… I don’t want to give any more away to avoid spoilers, but I would say, if you have a reasonable gaming PC, it is well worth picking up.

Most Anticipated TV Show Of 2021

Nominees: American Horror Stories, Loki, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Superman & Lois, The Last Of Us, The Nevers, Walker, WandaVision Falcon & Winter Soldier

Bronze: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Silver: Loki

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: American Horror Stories

We end the awards with the closest category, and just 0.1% separating the top two shows, but even the God Of Mischief couldn’t fend off Ryan Murphy’s juggernaut franchise. American Horror Stories is set to have the same crazy horror you’ve come to know and love, but will be set up as a weekly anthology show, with each of the individual hour-long episodes telling a different story, rather than a season-long overarching narrative.

The series was picked up partly as a way to plug the gap left by filming on the 10th Season of the main ‘American Horror Story’ show which is currently in limbo due to the pandemic. AHS was originally planned to film over the summer and was set at a beach, so the weather played a major factor in when they could shoot the horror drama, meaning it likely can’t shoot until Summer 2021. AHS has already been renewed up to Season 13, so it will return, we just don’t know when.

What we also don’t 100% know is where American Horror Stories will air in the UK. Currently, all new FX shows are under a distribution deal with the BBC in the UK. However, that deal appears to run out in October 2021 and may not get renewed due to Disney (who own FX) adding the “general entertainment content brand” STAR to Disney+, which should launch in February 2021. So depending on when ‘American Horror Stories’ premieres, it may be on the BBC, or it may be on Disney+, we’ll have to wait and see.

So that’s it for the 9th Annual Geektown Awards for now! Thank you to everyone that entered, and don’t forget to tune in to the Geektown Radio podcast next week to hear what you voted your ‘Top Ten Favourite TV Shows Of All Time’!
