‘Westworld’ Cancelled, Will Not Return For A 5th Season

As HBO’s new bosses at Warner Bros Discovery continue to shake things up across their portfolio, it has been announced that Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy’s Westworld has been cancelled after four seasons.

“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” said HBO in a statement about the multi-award-winning series. “We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.”

The drama, which was an adaptation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 movie, began in a futuristic theme park staffed by artificial beings, where guests of ‘Westworld’ could live out their wildest fantasies. However, the guests discovered “these violent delights have violent ends”, as the “hosts” began to run amok, and the human visitors found themselves in a place where anything could happen…

As the drama continued, it got progressively more bonkers, with multiple timelines, hosts jumping bodies, hosts breaking out of the park, and even going as far as to take over and control the human population.

“Making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers,” added Kilter Films in their own statement. “We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so.”

Over the course of its run, ‘Westworld’ racked up 9 Emmys from 54 nominations, with award nominations across the board including writing, acting, directing, production, score, and visual effects. It was also nominated for multiple Golden Globes, Hollywood Critics Association, Saturn, Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America awards.

Nolan recently spoke at NYCC about his wish to come back for a fifth and final season, but sadly that is not to be. However, we would say, the fourth season did rather feel like an endpoint anyway and serves quite well as a finale. So ultimately, it isn’t as painful of a cancellation as it has been for other shows which have ended on cliffhangers.

If you are going to miss your ‘Westworld’ fix, we would urge you to check out Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy’s new project The Peripheral, which is currently airing on Prime Video, and definitely scratches that itch. Nolan and Joy are also involved in a tv adaptation of the Fallout video for Prime Video, which is filming now.
