‘Galaxy Quest’ TV Series In Development (Again), This Time At Paramount+

A TV series based on the movie ‘Galaxy Quest’ has been put into development once again, and Paramount+ is behind it, the home of ‘Star Trek’, the franchise which the 1999 cult classic film parodied in the first place!

The movie, for those of you that didn’t see it (go watch on All4, it’s brilliantly funny!) told the story of a group of actors on a Star Trek-like tv show who – believing the actors to actually be their characters from their tv show – are abducted by aliens to save their galaxy. The film starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell and Enrico Colantoni.

This latest attempt at a live-action series adaptation is in the early stages of development at Paramount+ and has the original film’s producer, Mark Johnson (‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Interview with the Vampire’), attached as exec producer. There are no writers, cast or directors attached at the moment.

I say the “latest attempt” as Paramount TV Studios have been trying to bring some form of ‘Galaxy Quest’ back to the screen for years. The original idea was to do a direct sequel series or film with the original cast. The closest they got was in 2015 with a sequel series set at Amazon Studios, with the film’s co-writer Robert Gordon, and director, Dean Parisot, involved along with Johnson.  That, unfortunately, stalled following the untimely death of the great Alan Rickman from pancreatic cancer in 2016.

In 2017 the idea was revived at Amazon, with Paul Scheer writing, but bringing in a new cast with some guest spots from the old cast, in a sort of ‘Next Generation’ idea, but that also stalled. Then in 2021, Georgia Pritchett (‘Veep’, ‘Succession’) revealed she was working on a script for a ‘Galaxy Quest’ series alongside the legendary Simon Pegg, but things went quiet again. As to what direction this latest iteration will take (if it actually does make it to the screen) we don’t know.

The potential ‘Galaxy Quest’ tv series is very much in the early stage of development at Paramount, so it’s entirely possible it will not go anywhere (again), but we’ll let you know if we hear more.
