Top 5 Sci-Fi Universes We’d Love to Visit IRL

by Jason Smith

Major production and distribution studios have often left us mesmerized and in awe of different worlds that we, as the audience, would have never thought possible. Paramount, Warner Bros, HBO, MGM, and 20th Century Fox have, time and time again, delivered great storytelling coupled with real and believable visualizations, often involving worlds different from ours.

We are talking about the Game of Thrones universe, Star Trek’s post-scarcity and enlightened world(s), J.K. Rowling’s fictional world of Harry Potter, and Iain Banks’s fictional interstellar post-scarcity civilization, The Culture. All these fictional universes have left fans on the edge of their seats, almost wishing to relocate and live there rather than in the real world.

While real-world science has yet to catch up with these fictional wonders, we sat and thought, ‘What are the best sci-fi universes that fans would love to visit?’. Although the answers might be debatable, using a photo collage maker that serves as a vision board for these worlds is a great way to capture your favorite moments from these uniquely depicted worlds.

With that said, here are the top 5 sci-fi universes that we’d love to visit in real life (IRL).

  • A Galaxy Far Far Away – Star Wars

It only makes sense to start with one of the biggest sci-fi movies of all time: Star Wars. This franchise, created by George Lucas, has become a key identity in modern pop and movie culture since its inception in 1977.

Having grossed over $10 billion worldwide, it’s easy to see why audiences relate to this movie. There are very few sci-fi universes that are as richly detailed as Star Wars. Think of the sun-scorched deserts of Tatooine or the rich forests of Endor.

This universe is perfect, having been defined by its sense of adventure and the heroic journey, not to mention the diverse species and plants depicted in this franchise.

  • The World of Dune (Arrakis)

Dune is a classic and instant hit. But relevant to this topic, the universe that Dune is set in features a ton of things that fans would find attractive.

If you didn’t know, Arrakis is a dry desert planet where survival is hard-earned. This means that its ecosystems are delicate and harsh at the same time, as this desert is home to some legendary sandworms and fascinating mystical landscapes.

If you were to relocate and live in this world, you most probably would also have to deal with the political drama that characterizes this universe. This would include ancient rituals and frequently shifting alliances.

  • Los Angeles – The BladeRunner

For the gamers out there, have you ever played CyberPunk? That’s exactly how Los Angeles is depicted in the hit movie The Blade Runner. Los Angeles is depicted in this film as having neon-soaked streets with futuristic yet decaying urban landscapes.

This depiction makes this place one of the most visually striking and futuristic settings that any sci-fi enthusiast would be thrilled to visit. Dystopian environments coupled with many towering skyscrapers and dark alleyways set the scene for the storyline which involves tension between humans and ‘human looking robots’ also called replicas.

Your visit here would be of a dystopian nature as you would appreciate the beautiful city setting while being weary of the existing tension between humans and replicas.

  • The Culture, Created by Iain M. Banks

‘The Culture’ is one of the most fascinating and influential sci-fi books/series of all time. It’s known for its utopian vision and advanced technology that set the stage for complex morality issues and diverse philosophical themes.

But more importantly, this universe is one that fans would love to visit because of a host of reasons. For one, the utopian society and advanced technology sell this universe to anyone who’s into sci-fi. Who wouldn’t want a universe where advanced AI and technology are catering to humans and their basic needs. There’s no poverty, no way and no social hierarchy.

But that’s not all, this universe is full of beautiful worlds that set the tone for space exploration. The tech in this world makes it possible to effortlessly visit other worlds which are mind-bending and beautiful.

  • The Matrix

No way we wrap this up without talking about the Matrix. Rebellion, freedom and the relentless questioning of reality are just but a few features of the Matrix universe that made it an instant classic among fans worldwide.

Fans would be automatically drawn to this universe’s ability to bend the laws of physics while simultaneously rewriting the fabric of reality itself. Besides, who wouldn’t want to wake up in a universe where you can perform gravity-defying martial arts while jumping from car to car in high-speed chases?
