Jared Padalecki Reteams With ‘Walker’ Showrunner Anna Fricke For New Medical Drama At CBS

by Dave Elliott

Jared Padalecki is reteaming with his old ‘Walker’ showrunner, Anna Fricke, as CBS puts a new medical drama into development.

Before you go “not another medical drama”, this does at least have a different take. Like ‘Walker’, it is set in Texas, but not in a big hospital or urban medical facility. The drama will highlight rural medicine, something which is rarely seen on US TV.

According to Deadline, who broke the news, the currently untitled series centres on a headstrong, devoted country doctor (Padalecki) who practices his unique style of improvisational medicine alongside his new protégé, a young doctor running from her past, as they operate a mobile clinic and heal the bodies and souls of their underserved community in the medical desert of rural Texas.

Padalecki has been keeping busy since ‘Walker’ ended. His next job is a guest role on CBS’s hit series Fire Country alongside lead Max Thieriot. The three-episode arc sees him playing Camden Casey, a SoCal firefighter and maverick with a surfer swagger who is a force to be reckoned with and immediately recognizes Bode’s raw talent.

There has been talk of Padalecki’s ‘Fire Country’ role leading to another spin-off (currently titled ‘Fire Country: Surfside’) alongside the upcoming Sheriff Country, which stars Morena Baccarin. CBS has said that spin-off is still in contention, and it would be possible for Padalecki to headline both series if they both get picked up.

The untitled medical drama would see Fricke and Laura Terry executive produce through Fricke’s Pursued by a Bear alongside Padalecki and Dan Spilo. CBS Studios, where Fricke has an overall deal, and Padalecki a first-look deal, is the studio.

We stress, both the untitled medical drama and Fire Country: Surfside’ are “in development” at CBS so may not move forward, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
