Taylor Sheridan’s grip on Paramount+ continues as the streamer announces they have renewed the breakout hit oil rig drama ‘Landman‘ for Season 2, starring Billy Bob Thornton.
Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, ‘Landman’ is a modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs. Based on the notable 11-part podcast “Boomtown” from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly, the series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.
The renewal comes as Paramount also reveals the drama was the most-watched global premiere and finale of any series in Paramount+ history, the number one Paramount+ original ever on the service, and scored Billy Bob Thornton a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role as “Tommy Norris.”
Additionally, according to US ratings service, Nielsen, ‘Landman’ sits 8th in their top ten for the latter quarter of 2024, alongside Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Lioness’ in 9th place, and Sheridan’s ‘Tulsa King’ in 4th place. It is only the second time since Nielsen began tracking SVODs (in 2017), that any streaming service (outside of Netflix) has held three of the top 10 series.
“Landman was one of the biggest shows of the year because of Taylor Sheridan’s unique ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, harnessing the Neo-Western themes of rugged individualism, ambition and working-class struggles set against contemporary debates around energy, climate change and economic growth,” said Co-CEO of Paramount Global Chris McCarthy.
Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton leads the cast alongside Ali Larter (Heroes, The Rookie), Michelle Randolph (1923), Jacob Lofland (Joker 2), Kayla Wallace (When Calls the Heart), James Jordan (Yellowstone), Mark Collie (Nashville), Paulina Chávez (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia), and Demi Moore. Jon Hamm (Mad Men) will star in a recurring guest role with Andy Garcia (Expendables franchise) and Michael Peña (End of Watch) also serving as guest stars.
‘Landman’ is executive produced by co-creator Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, David Hutkin, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, co-creator Christian Wallace, Billy Bob Thornton, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman and Stephen Kay.
