The BBC has unveiled first-look images from ‘Titanic Sinks Tonight’, a bold four-part dramatised documentary that re-tells the infamous maritime disaster in real time, through the voices of those who lived it. Produced by Stellify Media for BBC Factual and BBC Northern Ireland, the series uses eyewitness testimony, letters, memoirs and public enquiry records to reconstruct the sinking of the Titanic as it happened on that fateful night in April 1912.
When the “unsinkable” liner left Belfast on her maiden voyage, she was the pride of modern engineering. But just four days later, the world’s most famous ship struck an iceberg and began her tragic descent into the icy Atlantic. ‘Titanic Sinks Tonight’ takes viewers minute by minute through the event, from the crucial seconds before the collision to the haunting final plunge beneath the waves, offering a chillingly immersive window into how the 2,208 passengers and crew experienced those final hours.
The cast includes Rhys Mannion (The Outrun) as First-Class passenger Jack Thayer, Vicky Allen (The Woman in White) as stewardess Violet Jessop, Tyger Drew-Honey (Outnumbered) as Harold Bride, and Patrick Buchanan (Blue Lights) as Bruce Ismay. They are joined by a broad ensemble portraying officers, passengers and crew, each bringing to life the real words and recollections of those aboard the doomed ship.
Filmed in Northern Ireland using cutting-edge virtual production technology at Studio Ulster, the production combines historical authenticity with cinematic craft. Behind the scenes, Stellify Media’s Kieran Doherty and Matthew Worthy serve as executive producers, alongside Fiona Keane for BBC Northern Ireland. The series also features expert commentary from JJ Chalmers, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb, Admiral Lord West, and authors Nadifa Mohamed and Jeanette Winterson, grounding the drama with fresh analysis of the ship’s legacy and lessons.
Supported by Northern Ireland Screen, and with international partners ARTE and SBS Australia, ‘Titanic Sinks Tonight’ promises to be one of the BBC’s most ambitious factual dramas to date. It tells the story not just of the ship that sank, but of the people who survived to tell its story.
‘Titanic Sinks Tonight’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
