‘The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin’ returns for one surprise episode on Apple TV after Season 2 was scrapped

A surprise single episode of The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin has quietly appeared on Apple TV and is available to stream now, months after the series was thought to have ended for good.

Back in January, fans were disappointed to learn that the second season had been scrapped despite being around three-quarters through filming. Reports at the time suggested production came to an abrupt halt when a “key cast member”, widely believed to be Noel Fielding (The Mighty Boosh, The Great British Bake Off), failed to return to set after the Christmas break. Officially, the shutdown was attributed to illness, but sources told Deadline that Apple and producers Big Talk Studios were left with no viable way to complete the season.

The newly released episode, which runs just over half an hour, appears to have been stitched together from the footage already shot for the cancelled second season, with a few clever edits and some body-double work to bridge missing scenes. It marks an unexpected coda for the 18th-century comedy romp that reimagined Britain’s most charming highwayman as a flamboyant, reluctant outlaw with fabulous hair and a flair for showmanship.

The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin’ originally launched on Apple TV+ in 2024, pairing Fielding’s surreal humour with a cast that included Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Tamsin Greig (Episodes), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), and Jessica Hynes (Spaced). The show was praised for its absurdist tone and lavish production, and had been renewed for Season 2 before the unexpected shutdown.

Following the cancellation, Fielding returned to work elsewhere, including his role as a team captain on Sky’s Never Mind The Buzzcocks and as co-host of The Great British Bake Off. Apple, meanwhile, has since rebranded its streaming service, dropping the “Plus” to become simply Apple TV.

Whether this lone episode represents a farewell to the world of Dick Turpin or a test balloon for future “completely made-up” adventures remains to be seen. But for fans of Fielding’s unique brand of whimsical chaos, it’s a welcome, if slightly ghostly, encore.
