FX has confirmed fresh details on the next chapter of ‘Shogun‘, revealing an impressive mix of new and returning cast for season two, alongside a stacked line-up of directors and writers. The acclaimed historical epic returns to screens a decade after the events of the first season, picking up the story of Toranaga and Blackthorne as their fates remain tightly bound together.
The new season will stream on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally, which means UK viewers can expect it to land on Disney+, although no premiere date has been announced. Production kicks off this January in Vancouver, with the reveal taking place during The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific Disney+ Originals Preview event in Hong Kong.
Returning to lead the story are Hiroyuki Sanada (Sunshine) as Toranaga and Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth) as Blackthorne. They are joined by returning cast Fumi Nikaidô (River’s Edge), Shinnosuke Abe (A Man), Hiroto Kanai (My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999), Yoriko Dôguchi (Shin Godzilla), Tommy Bastow (The Crossing), Yuko Miyamoto (13 Assassins), Eita Okuno (Kingdom) and Yuka Kouri (Gifted).
Season two also welcomes new cast members Asami Mizukawa (Aya), Masataka Kubota (Tokyo Ghoul), Sho Kaneta (Hidenobu), Takaaki Enoki (Lord Ito) and Jun Kunimura (G?da), adding even more star power to the already formidable ensemble.
Directors Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga, who both delivered standout episodes in season one, return once again, joined by Anthony Byrne, Kate Herron and series co-creator Justin Marks. On the writing team for the new episodes are Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente and Sofie Somoroff.
For anyone who missed the global phenomenon last time around, season one followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga during a fight for survival against political rivals on the Council of Regents. Everything changed when an English navigator, John Blackthorne, washed ashore with knowledge that could tilt the balance of power. The series went on to win a record-breaking eighteen Emmy Awards, including historic wins for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, cementing its place as one of the most celebrated dramas of recent years.
Season two promises a sweeping continuation of this saga, set ten years after Toranaga’s rise, exploring the long shadow of war, shifting alliances and the ever-tightening bond between two men from entirely different worlds.
‘Shogun‘ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Disney+ in the UK and FX in the USA. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
