The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Is Getting A Surprise Third Expansion, ‘Songs Of The Past’, In 2027

Well, this was not on my 2026 bingo card… CD PROJEKT RED has announced ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs Of The Past’, a brand-new third expansion for one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, arriving in 2027.

Yes, that ‘The Witcher 3’. The one released back in 2015. The one that already had two massive expansions, ‘Hearts of Stone’ and ‘Blood and Wine’. The one many of us assumed was done and dusted, aside from next-gen updates, mod support, and the occasional excuse to lose another 100 hours wandering around Velen. Apparently, Geralt is not quite ready to hang up the swords just yet.

‘Songs Of The Past’ will return players to the role of legendary monster slayer Geralt of Rivia for a brand-new adventure, launching in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

CD PROJEKT RED is co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, a studio made up of industry veterans, including developers who worked on ‘The Witcher 3’. That is also the team currently working with CD PROJEKT RED on the remake of the original ‘The Witcher’, so they are rather familiar with Geralt’s world.

Actual story details are still being kept firmly under wraps. We know Geralt is back, but where exactly this slots into ‘The Witcher 3’ timeline remains unclear. The announcement artwork has already sparked speculation, particularly around the sword Geralt is seen drawing, because Witcher fans can and will analyse every pixel if you give them half a chance.

The timing is interesting too, as CD PROJEKT RED has been very clear that ‘The Witcher 4’ will shift the focus to Ciri. In a recent financial update, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski described this new expansion as a return to Geralt “before we pass the baton to Ciri in the upcoming The Witcher 4.”

That makes ‘Songs Of The Past’ feel like something more than a random bit of DLC nostalgia. It could act as a final proper Geralt adventure before the franchise fully moves forward with Ciri at the centre.

There is also the small matter of ‘The Witcher 3’ still being absolutely enormous. The game has now reportedly passed 65 million copies sold, having already been one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs ever made, with more than 250 Game of the Year awards and over 1,000 industry awards. That is a massive audience to come back to, and it certainly helps explain why CD PROJEKT RED might fancy giving the White Wolf one more major outing.

The original game follows Geralt as he searches for Ciri across a huge dark fantasy open world, taking on monsters, political nightmares, deeply questionable nobles, and enough morally messy side quests to make “just one more contract” a dangerous lie.

Since launch, ‘The Witcher 3’ has also continued to evolve, with CD PROJEKT RED supporting it through major updates, next-gen enhancements, mod support, and graphical improvements. The upcoming expansion will arrive more than a decade after the original release, which is slightly absurd, but also very exciting.

More details on ‘Songs Of The Past’ are due to be revealed in late summer 2026.

There’s been rumours about one final DLC for the Witcher 3 for well over six months now, everyone was just waiting for CD PROJEKT RED to finally announce it. I loved the Witcher 3, though the huge scale of the overall game, I’ve never actually completed it fully. Blood and Wine was a fantastic expansion, so hopefully Songs of the Past will be one last great adventure for Geralt before Ciri takes centre stage in the Witcher 4. CD PROJEKT RED also announced updated PC system requirements to coincide with the new DLC, so anyone wanting to play it will have to upgrade to Windows 11 and also any hardware that might be out of date too.
