Geekstorians Season 2 Finale Explores Why Nothing Went To Plan. Season 3 Coming Next Week!

by Dave Elliott

The second season of Geekstorians comes to a close this week with ‘Nothing Went To Plan’, a shorter, reflective finale which steps back from the individual stories of the season to look at the bigger pattern running underneath them.

Across Season 2, Dave has been exploring the strange survival stories of geek culture. Films that nearly vanished. Companies that collapsed under their own weight. Shows that were cancelled, neglected, buried, or written off. Disasters that, somehow, became origin stories.

The finale brings those threads together and asks why so many geek culture landmarks seem to emerge not from careful planning, but from broken systems, bad decisions, institutional indifference, and the people who refused to let those stories disappear.

From Pixar’s near-catastrophic deletion of ‘Toy Story 2’ and Atari’s buried cartridges, to ‘Doctor Who’ surviving the wilderness years, ‘Star Trek’ fans organising a letter-writing campaign, ‘Deadpool’ finding momentum through leaked test footage, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ becoming a midnight ritual, and ‘World of Warcraft’ accidentally unleashing a virtual plague, the episode connects the season’s central idea: geek culture does not survive because everything goes smoothly. It survives because people keep showing up when the official version says the story is over.

The episode also acts as a bridge into what comes next. Season 1 of ‘Geekstorians’ was about construction, looking at how fandom built its own rooms, networks, rituals and language. Season 2 has been about survival, looking at what happens when those things face collapse, neglect or disaster.

Season 3 begins next week, and moves into the conquest era: the moment geek culture stops being a subculture and becomes the culture. It’s about what happens when the things built by fans, obsessives and people who cared too much suddenly become valuable enough for the mainstream to notice.

So, whilst ‘Nothing Went To Plan’ brings Season 2 to a close, there won’t be a long wait for the next chapter. ‘Geekstorians’ Season 3 begins next week on Wednesday, 17th June 2026.
