Peacock’s live-action adaptation of ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ has found the voice of its magnificently self-important feline star, as audiobook narrator Jeff Hays (Dungeon Crawler Carl) joins the series as Princess Donut.
The announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con during Penguin Random House’s “Spotlight on Matt Dinniman” panel. Hays surprised the audience during a conversation between series writer and executive producer Chris Yost and author Matt Dinniman, who serves as co-executive producer on the television adaptation.
For fans of the audiobooks, the casting should come as very welcome news. Hays narrates the entire series and provides the distinctive voice of Princess Donut, Carl’s tiara-wearing, award-winning show cat and increasingly demanding partner in surviving the apocalypse.
The audio editions of ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ have amassed more than 140 million listening hours on Audible. Dinniman’s LitRPG series has also sold over 14 million copies across all formats, with the Ace editions spending more than 115 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
The story begins after an alien invasion wipes out most of humanity. The remaining survivors are forced to compete in Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, a sadistic intergalactic game show where they must battle monsters, aliens, other contestants and an extremely unstable artificial intelligence.
Coast Guard veteran Carl enters the dungeon alongside his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk. Unfortunately for Carl, Donut is stuck-up, self-centred, highly opinionated and considerably more interested in becoming an intergalactic celebrity than making his life any easier.
As the official synopsis puts it: “Survival is optional. Entertainment is not.”
The adaptation comes from Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door and Universal Global Television. Chris Yost writes and executive produces the series, alongside executive producers Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald. Dinniman serves as co-executive producer.
Hays is currently the first announced cast member, meaning Peacock still has the relatively minor task of finding its Carl, along with the humans, aliens, monsters and assorted murderous game show personalities who populate the dungeon.
‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ does not yet have a premiere date on Peacock, and no UK broadcaster or streaming service has been announced.
