The Walsh family drama is far from over, as the BBC has announced ‘The Walsh Sisters‘ will return for a second six-part series, with the dysfunctional Dublin family facing a fresh collection of relationship problems, personal crises and general familial chaos.
Inspired by the novels of international bestselling author Marian Keyes, ‘The Walsh Sisters’ follows five sisters, Rachel, Claire, Maggie, Helen and Anna, alongside their long-suffering parents, as they attempt to navigate life, love and each other.
Series 2 will see Rachel step outside the family bubble as she tries to navigate recovery on her own terms. However, an encounter with a familiar face threatens to test that newfound independence. Claire finds herself pushing back against the different expectations placed on her as a mother compared to those placed on her ex as a father, while Maggie’s attempts to create the perfect family hit an unexpected marital crossroads.
Elsewhere, Helen becomes increasingly overprotective of her sisters while also struggling with her own emotional wellbeing, and Anna turns to some rather unusual methods as she attempts to get over heartbreak.
All five sisters find themselves questioning who they really are when the roles they have previously played no longer seem to fit. Daddy Walsh, naturally, remains largely oblivious to most of this, instead concentrating on landing himself a role in the local amateur dramatic musical, much to Mammy Walsh’s exasperation.
Returning to lead the cast are Caroline Menton (Oddity) as Rachel, Danielle Galligan (House of Guinness, Spilt Milk, Shadow and Bone) as Claire, Máiréad Tyers (Extraordinary, My Lady Jane, Belfast) as Helen, Stefanie Preissner (How to Adult) as Maggie, and Louisa Harland (Derry Girls, Renegade Nell, Love/Hate) as Anna.
Also returning are Aidan Quinn (This is My Father, Legends of the Fall, Song for a Raggy Boy) as Jack “Daddy” Walsh and Carrie Crowley (An Cailín Ciúin, Hope Street, Smother) as Mammy Walsh.
They will be joined by several new faces. Peter Coonan (Bad Sisters, Peaky Blinders) plays David, a fellow recovering addict who enters Rachel’s life, while Aislín McGuckin (Normal People, The Miniaturist) joins as Patsy Costello, Luke’s mother. Art Campion (How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, Blue Lights) appears as an old schoolfriend of the sisters, with Fay Ripley (Cold Feet, Suspects) playing marriage counsellor Sharon.
Stefanie Preissner continues as creative lead and writer, with the new series drawing on Marian Keyes’ novels The Mystery of Mercy Close and Angels.
The drama is produced by Cuba Pictures, a VICE Studios company, and Metropolitan Pictures for RTÉ, in association with the BBC, Screen Ireland and Cineflix Rights. The BBC acquired the series for BBC iPlayer and BBC One from Cineflix Rights, which also handles international distribution.
Dixie Linder and Nick Marston executive produce for Cuba Pictures, alongside David McLoughlin for Metropolitan Pictures, David Crean and Dermot Horan for RTÉ, Tom Misselbrook for Cineflix Rights, Stefanie Preissner, Marian Keyes and Tony Baines. Patrick O’Donoghue serves as producer.
‘The Walsh Sisters‘ Series 2 will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
