GeekTown’s Doctor Who & Sarah Jane DVD Competition!

by Dave Elliott

Well it’s post Easter and usually by this time the BBC have treated us to the latest series of Doctor Who

Unfortunately for all you Whovians out there though, this year The Doctor isn’t returning until Autumn 2012… Boo…

Fear not though… Here at GeekTown we have a solution to help get you over your Doctor Who hump!

Thanks to the lovely, wonderful people at BBCShop.com, we have a pile of Doctor Who & Sarah Jane DVDs for you to win!

The prizes are split into 3 groups:

Prize 1. Classic Who – Doctor Who: U.N.I.T Files Box Set & Doctor Who: The Sensorites

Doctor Who: U.N.I.T Files Box Set

Doctor Who: U.N.I.T Files Box Set

Doctor Who: U.N.I.T Files Box Set includes 2 stories. The first is ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs‘, a story from towards end of the Jon Pertwee’s run as the 3rd Doctor. The tale opens with The Doctor and Sarah return to 1970s London only to find that the city has been evacuated due to the mysterious appearance of dinosaurs!

DVD extras include Audio Commentary from various actors and the director; Now and Then – a short documentary returning to the filming locations; People, Power and Puppetry – a documentary of the cast and crew looking back on the making of the story; A photo gallery, deleted scenes, and some cringe-worthy and thankfully short footage of Jon Pertwee at Devesham Smart’s Circus!

The second story in the set is ‘The Android Invasion‘ featuring Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor. The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith land in the sleepy village of Devesham (he was aiming for London…), but it seems they maybe further off course than they thought… As they start to investigate, things seem very strange. Why all the coins freshly minted showing the same year? And why has that man thrown himself off a cliff for no reason? And why are those men in white suits shooting at us… using their fingers?…

The Sensorites

The Sensorites

DVD Extras include the documentaries ‘The Village That Came to Life’ – with cast, crew and local residents look back at the making of the story, and ‘Life After Who’ talking to producer Phillip Hinchcliffe about his career. The disc also includes a commentary, photo gallery, and randomly, a Weetabix advert for a Doctor Who themed promotion!

The Sensorites‘ is a William Hartnell story, where The Doctor and his companions land on a spaceship, which is apparently still moving, despite the fact that most of the crew seem to be dead. After managing to revive a couple of the surviving members, they explain, they are on an exploration mission from Earth to study the ‘Sense-Sphere’… The only problem is, having established an orbit around the sphere, it’s residents, the Sensorites, are refusing to let the ship leave…

Along with the usual Commentary and Photo Gallery, the DVD Extras include the documentaries ‘Looking for Peter’ where Comedian and Whovian Toby Hadoke goes in search of the enigmatic writer Peter R Newman; ‘Vision On’ – explaining what exactly a Vision Mixer does; and ‘Secret Voices of the Sense-Sphere’ where producer Clive Doig reveals the origins of the eerie Sensorite voices.

Prize 2. The Sarah Jane Adventures – The Complete Collection

Sarah Jane

The Sarah Jane Adventures

Next  we have The Sarah Jane Adventures – The Complete Collection, which (as you’d probably expect from the title) contains every episode from all 5 series of the award-winning Doctor Who spin-off, plus some extra special features!

The show follows ex-companion of the Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), who’s now working as investigative journalist as she combat evil alien forces, such as the Judoon, the Graske, Sontarans and the Slitheen. Helping her fight off the pesky aliens are her adopted son Luke, extraterrestrial computer Mr. Smith, a host of the neighbourhood kid,  with the occasional helping hand from everyone’s favourite robot dog K-9, and even The Doctor himself, with both the Tenth (David Tennant) and Eleventh (Matt Smith) popping up in later series!
The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe

The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe

Prize 3. The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe

Here we have the latest outing by current Doctor Matt Smith, as he goes on his annual Christmas adventure! After being evacuated to a house in Dorset from war-torn London, Madge Arwell and her two children (Lily and Cyril), are greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world…

DVD Extras include 3 x 45 minute features commissioned by BBC America and only seen in the US, showcasing the favourite moments of all the series that feature Matt Smith as the Doctor, and the short prequel!

I’d make a good companion because I’ve watched pretty much every episode of ‘current’ and ‘older’ series of Doctor Who…so he wouldn’t have to keep explaining to me who his familiar enemies are…I bet he gets right fed up with that ;) I’d promise not to keep wandering off on strange planets so he didn’t have to keep rescuing me!I’d be a right laugh in a ‘Sarah Millican’ kind of wayplus I could come in quite useful being a Sci-Fi Geek as I’d impart my knowledge of all the other shows I love like Star Trek and Stargate to help him out of puzzling situations. I can adapt things like McGyver and the A-Team so I’d keep the Tardis up and running and I don’t have one of those dopey boyfriends like Rory or Mickey to worry about ;)

I’d make a good companion for the doctor because I’m a really good cook. You never see him eat! Time lords need food too :)

I’d make a good companion because I’m blonde and a little bit ditzy, but can be very fiesty and determined when I want to get something done! Plus who wouldn;t want to work alongside Matt Smith x

I feel my qualifications should speak for themselves:
1) A bronze certificate in ‘Unlikely And Unconvincing Ankle Spraining Whilst Escaping From Bubblewrap Monsters’.
2) Grade 2 in ‘Being Too Shortsighted To Realise I’m Repeatedly Running Down The Same Corridor Filmed From Multiple Angles’.
3) My cub scout ‘Finding Myself In Ludicrous Cliffhanger Scenarios At Least Twice An Hour’ badge
4) A BTEC from Weston-Super-Mare college in ‘Asking Stupid Questions To Provide Necessary Exposition’.
Plus, I am definately not Bonnie Langford (reason enough in itself) and look fabulous in chamois leather.

I would make a good companion as I’ve found very few people can be angry/aggressive when offered cake and I’m sure the same applies to aliens. I make the best triple chocolate, marshmallow and caramel brownies ever, good enough to bring a smile to the face of a Sontaran.

Retweeted @wava_wanda – I have my own personal sonic screwdriver! In addition as a multi-tasking woman, being thrown into different dimensions would be water off a duck’s back. I’ve also always wanted to sit on a dalek’s head and have a bucking broncho exterminate session!!!!

I’ll be honest and say I’d make a rubbish companion, I’m grumpy, not attractive like his other female sidekicks, I lose the plot under pressure and am addicted to caffeine and nicotine. On a positive note I could put up a good fight in my New Rock Boots!

1. Because I make an amazingly good cup of tea

2. Because I have previous experience as I was abducted by aliens a few years ago and during that time I learnt how to block mind control which is a bonus : )

3. Im completely off my trolley most of the time so we’d get on great!

Because I am geeky and eccentric the doctor and myself would be great friends, And I also love jelly babies, I also love danger and exploring

I would make a good ‘mate’ which he said was what he wanted. It’s not all drama with the doctor so he could do with a good laugh every now and again because if he was a bad situation you can’t let them get him down else he will lose. I’m good under pressure so just in case he regenerates in front of me i will be fine, I’m not a total girl so nothing will bother me apart from if the doctor was to die but he wont, he’s to good for that!!!

I am quite calm and confident, keen to explore with a good sense of direction and have a knack of picking up languages. I am old (or so my kids tell me) but still feel young (perhaps I am a time Lord?) I get on with people I meet easily and am up for an adventure whenever possible. But just as importantly is that this has been my dream since I was about 9 years old!

I would be willing to try anything!I am resourceful and bright and plucky and daring! I love to explore and visit new places! I want to see the future, and learn more about the past and visit new worlds and most of all find out if there is life beyond this earth!

I would make a great companion for the Doctor because I am very brave and I am willing to go back or forward in time to meet new monsters, have great adventures and save lots of people. I am very brave and courageous and can make up really good jokes when the Doctor is in a good mood. Therefore I think that I would be a great companion.

I would make a fabulous companion because I am very open minded and compassionate. I would be perfect to help the doctor to keep the balance and stop him from losing his humanity. I would be perfect, as Katherine Tate was, to stop him from letting everyone die in a disaster, to stop him from destroying himself because he was so caught up in the victory defieting an enemy. I would also be able to offer him companionship without romance, unless he wanted it ofcourse. I would be perfect because I would just be there for him, helping him and I would try to learn from him as best I could. I would be able to create the friendship he needs to stop feeling so lonely.

I’d be a great companion, pretty much useless so I could be killed off – imagine the drama. It’d have to be in some world saving way though, nothing rubbish!
