Trailers & Our Reaction To 5 New Fox Shows Including Seth MacFarlane’s ‘The Orville’

Now that Fox has completed it’s Upfront presentation, the US network has dropped trailers online for 5 of their new upcoming series. We take a look at, and give our reactions to Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi comedy ‘The Orville‘, scifi comedy ‘Ghosted‘, comedy ‘LA To Vegas‘, medical drama ‘The Resident‘ and the extended promo for X-Men show ‘The Gifted‘.

THE ORVILLE

Set 400 years in the future, the live-action comedy-drama follows the adventures of the Orville, a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory ship in Earth’s interstellar fleet. Facing cosmic challenges from without and within, this motley crew of space explorers will boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before.

CAST: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman

WHAT WE THINK: Comedy sci-fi isn’t something the US have really done on tv much before, but I do rather like the look of this. I think it’s fair to say, whether you like this show will largely depend of whether you like Seth MacFarlane’s humor… Personally, I do. It’s slickly produced, the trailer has some solid laughs, and who doesn’t love a Star Trek style send up!.. (Got through the whole of that without mentioning Galaxy Quest… Ahh dammit!)

Ghosted

Follows a cynical skeptic and a genius “true believer” in the paranormal who are recruited by the Bureau Underground to look into the rampant “unexplained” activity in Los Angeles – all while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race.

CAST: Craig Robinson, Adam Scott, Adeel Akhtar, Ally Walker, Edi Patterson

WHAT WE THINK: It’s basically comedy X-Files… Not entirely convinced by the trailer, but the leads seem likeable enought, so i’m prepared to give it a shot.

LA To Vegas

Set on the Friday night flight from LAX to Vegas and the returning flight on Sunday, it follows a group of underdogs trying to find their place in the world who all share the same goal: to come back a winner in the casino of life.

CAST: Kim Matula, Ed Weeks, Nathan Lee Graham, Olivia Macklin, Peter Stormare, Dylan McDermott

WHAT WE THINK: I’m not sure if I should admit this, but… I thought Anchorman was… only ‘okay’… And I didn’t really like Talladega Nights. This looks, well.. fine, I guess. Just seems a little predictable. Given it’s got poor old unlucky Dylan McDermott in it, the show will probably only last one season though. ;)

The Resident

An idealistic young doctor begins his first day eager to save lives. Under the supervision of a tough, brilliant senior resident, he’ll soon discover his chosen profession is not what he imagined and that ethical lines are often blurred.

CAST: Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Shaunette Wilson, Valerie Cruz, Bruce Greenwood

WHAT WE THINK: Given the relative blandness of the description, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this. Having now seen the trailer, it does seem to lift it from being an entirely generic medical drama, so might be worth giving a shot. Having Gilmore Girls alumnus Matt Czuchry in there doesn’t hurt either.

The Gifted

https://youtu.be/qTzW9rMcbzk

Two ordinary parents discover that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

CAST: Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Sean Teale, Jamie Chung, Coby Bell, Emma Dumont, Blair Redford, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White

WHAT WE THINK: We’ve already seen a short trailer for The Gifted, so it’s nice to get a bit more from this extended promo. I’m already predisposed to liking the show, given it’s got Angel/Person Of Interest’s Amy Acker in it, and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer. Throw in some mutant powers and an X-Men reference, and I’m sold!

As these are brand new shows, there are no UK TV Air Dates for them yet, but keep an eye on the site over the next few months for updates!
