SDCC: ‘Riverdale’ Season 2 Trailer & News

by Dave Elliott

Another trailer which slipped under our SDCC radar was for Riverdale‘ Season 2, which comes to Netflix UK from Thursday, 12th October 2017.

Season 1 ended with a couple of dramatic twists. Jason Blossom’s murder had been resolved, but not before Cheryl had set the house on fire in utter disgust at her family. Veronica was going to have to deal with the return of her father, Hiram Lodge, and Archie also had major parental problems, after Fred was shot in Pop’s Diner!

As KJ Apa has hinted before, things get a lot darker for Archie and the gang as we head into Season 2. The crime-drama/noir elements will be amped up, but it won’t be entirely doom and gloom. “There’s always going to be humour and the aspirational friendship element,” commented exec producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Cheryl is set to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of her burnt down mansion.  “She’s taking control of her life, she’s not letting her parents abuse her anymore, and she’s going to be the one holding the reins in the relationship with her mother,” comments actress Madelaine Petsch. She’s also getting a new love interest, who will be a newcomer to town.

Betty is set to be at the centre of the gang’s new mystery in the first half of the season. “She’s thrown into something that she never imagined and her circumstances break her,” teases Betty’s alter-ego, Lili Reinhart. Expect to see a more vulnerable and hopeless version of the character than we’ve seen before.

It appears Archie has picked a side, and will be staying with Veronica. Betty loves Jughead, so it’s #Varchie all the way this season as their relationship picks up speed. Although, that doesn’t mean they can’t find some other reasons to put B & V in conflict with each other…

They also addressed the rumours about bringing the ‘Archie adjacent’ Sabrina the Teenage Witch to the show. Surprisingly, Aguirre-Sacasa didn’t shoot down the idea, but he did admit it causes some major headaches for writers. “It does feel like if you’re going to introduce that character, the rules of the world change,” he comments. “So, part of it is figuring out how that actually is going to work. I probably have already said too much, but it’s certainly something I aspire and hope to do in some way.”

Riverdale‘ Season 2 comes to Netflix UK from Thursday, 12th October 2017.
