SDCC: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Trailer & News

by Dave Elliott

With SDCC all done, I’m just checking around for things we missed over the weekend, and one of the big ones that slipped past was a new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery, which comes to Netflix UK on Monday, 25th September 2017.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

The Star Trek: Discovery panel, moderated by series guest star Rainn Wilson (“Harry Mudd”), featured a conversation with cast members including Sonequa Martin-Green (“First Officer Michael Burnham”), Jason Isaacs (“Captain Gabriel Lorca”), Doug Jones (“Lt. Saru”), Shazad Latif (“Lt. Ash Tyler”), Mary Wiseman (“Cadet Sylvia Tilly”), Anthony Rapp (“Lt. Paul Stamets”) and James Frain (“Ambassador Sarek”). They were joined by executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Heather Kadin and Akiva Goldsman.

A couple of new little bits of info came out of the panel, including quite a big reveal about First Officer Burnham’s relationship to Sarek (James Frain). “I was raised on Vulcan by him and Amanda [Sarek’s human wife, and Spock’s mother] after the murder of my parents,” comments Sonequa. “I was basically committed to Captain Georgiou [Michelle Yeoh] through my surrogate dad, Sarek.”

Anthony Rapp, who plays Star Trek’s first openly gay character, Lt. Paul Stamets, will have a love interest in fellow crew member, Dr. Hugh Culber, played by Wilson Cruz (’13 Reasons Why’, ‘Party of Five’, ‘My So-Called Life’). The panel went on to talk extensively about their dedication in trying to live up to Gene Roddenberry’s original ideals, and create a series of diversity and optimism. “Come on the journey with us,” says Sonequa. “Hopefully, it will help you learn something about yourself and the people around you, because that’s what our story does.”

We also learned that you may want to brush up on your Klingon, as the Klingon characters will be speaking their own language most of the time (with subtitles for the less dedicated fans…) ;)

Star Trek: Discovery‘ comes to Netflix UK on Monday, 25th September 2017.
