Amazon’s long-in-development ‘Galaxy Quest’ revival series has landed a new writer the streaming service has announced.

Actor/writer/comedian Paul Scheer (‘The League’) has taken over writing duties from Robert Gordon, who also penned the original film. The movie, for those of you that didn’t see it (go watch, it’s brilliantly funny!) told the story of a group of actors on a Star Trek-like tv show who, believing the actors to be their characters on the show, are abducted by aliens to save their galaxy.

The original plan for the revival series was to try and bring all the original cast back together for a new adventure, but with Tim Allen being tied up on ‘Last Man Standing’, and the untimely death of Alan Rickman, the project was put on hold.

“Galaxy Quest is really close to being resurrected in a very creative way,” Allen said in an interview with THR last year. “It’s closer than I can tell you, but I can’t say more than that. The real kicker is that Alan now has to be left out. It’s been a big shock on many levels.”

It’s unclear whether any of the remaining cast, which included Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni and Sigourney Weaver, will be returning, or whether the new writer will take it in a different direction. Tim Allen is now available though, after US network ABC canceled ‘Last Man Standing’ earlier in the year.

They also have the additional problem that Seth Macfarlane’s The Orville, somewhat beat them to the punch, and treads over some very similar ground to ‘Galaxy Quest’. Whether that will also have some impact on the rewrite remains to be seen.

As ‘Galaxy Quest’ is currently only in development, there’s no news on air dates yet, but we will keep you updated as we hear more!
