George R.R. Martin To Exec Produce Adaptation Of Nnedi Okorafor’s ‘Who Fears Death’ At HBO

Oh, George… You really are trying to get out of finishing the damn book, aren’t you! Today HBO announced the ‘Game Of Thrones’ author (and slow writer) George R.R. Martin has joined with former HBO President Michael Lombardo to exec produce an adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor’s sci-fi novel ‘Who Fears Death’.

The script is being written by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and is a coming-of-age story set in post-nuclear-holocaust Africa, which follows Onyesowu, a young girl whose background makes her an outcast. She must go on a journey from self-reproach to love, but to do so she’ll have to overcome untold obstacles – defeating her hated sorcerer father and becoming the instrument of prophetic deliverance for a land of oppressed people, all the while fighting to master the terrifying powers growing inside her.

The show comes as part of Martin’s overall deal with HBO to develop new series for the channel, including the mooted ‘Game Of Thrones’ spin-offs. Despite my ribbing at the top of the article, with the GoT main show coming to an end next year, this hopefully won’t distract the author too much from finishing off ‘The Winds of Winter’.

‘Who Fears Death’ was originally published in 2010, and author Nnedi Okorafor went on to write a prequel released in 2015. The show sees Martin reteam with Lombardo who was in charge of HBO when ‘Game Of Thrones’ was under development. They will both exec produce alongside Angela Mancuso (‘Tut’). Okorafor will serve as consultant on the series.

‘Who Fears Death’ is currently only in development at HBO, so no air dates yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
