Last May, we got the news that Steven Spielberg, Amblin TV and Warner Bros were working on a reboot of the legendary cartoon series Animaniacs! Now, it’s been revealed that US streaming service Hulu has picked up the show for, not 1, but 2 seasons with a straight-to-series order!

For those younger Geektowners out there who haven’t experienced the glory that is ‘Animaniacs’, the show originally ran from 1993-97, and usually aired on Saturday mornings kids tv in the UK. It’s a kind of animated variety show, with a huge cast of character segments, linked together by the Warner siblings – Yakko, Wakoo and Dot. Other characters included Goodfeathers – a trio of pigeons based on characters from the film Goodfellas, Slappy Squirrel – a grumpy cartoon veteran, who lives with her nephew, the annoyingly upbeat ‘Skippy’, and of course, Pinky and the Brain – One genius and one idiot lab mice, who each week try (and fail) to take over the world…

“We cannot wait to work with Steven Spielberg and the entire Amblin and Warner Bros. teams to bring more sketches, catchphrases, songs and laughs from the Animaniacs to kids and adults everywhere,” commented Craig Erwich, senior VP of content at Hulu. “Now one of the most beloved, inventive and funny animated franchises in history, Animaniacs and its cast of witty characters can live on, on Hulu. This marks yet another big move for us as we continue our efforts to be the No. 1 streaming destination for premium animated content.”

“I am so pleased and proud that Animaniacs will have a home at Hulu,” adds Spielberg, who will, once again, serve is EP on the show. “Together with Warner Bros., we look to bring new audiences and longtime fans into this wild world of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot.”

Whilst this is great news for our US cousins, that doesn’t help those of us on this side of the Atlantic as Hulu doesn’t operate in the UK. Hopefully, we will see one of the traditional channels pick up Animaniacs in due course. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
