‘The Shannara Chronicles’ Cancelled. Show Being Shopped To Other Networks.

The Shannara Chronicles may have chronicled it’s last chronicle, as news lands today that the fantasy drama has not been renewed for a 3rd Season.

Based on the best-selling fantasy books by Terry Brooks, the show is set in a world thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization. Earth is divided into what is known as the Four Lands, whose inhabitants are a mix of races including elves, dwarves, trolls, gnomes and humans. At the centre is the Shannara family, whose descendants are empowered with ancient magic and whose adventures continuously reshape the future of the world.

Sonar Entertainment, the producers of the show, are shopping it around to other networks, and whilst usually, this is a bit of a “hell mary” pass and often goes nowhere, Shannara has been bounced around US networks before. The show originally aired on MTV before being moved over onto Spike, both of which are owned by Viacom (the people that own the Channel 5 network in the UK.) Netflix holds the On Demand rights in the US and in certain international territories, so they could be a possible buyer. Amazon would also be a possibility, given there recent interest in big fantasy dramas.

The news of the cancellation comes on the back of the US Spike channel being rebranded into the Paramount Network tomorrow. It’s not clear if they’ve just decided it’s not the “right fit” for the channel moving forward, or whether it’s the usual issue of cost vs. ratings. Shannara was the most expensive pilot ever produced for MTV when the show launched, so it’s not a cheap prospect for a network wishing to take it forward.

We’ll let you know if we get any more news, but as of right now, The Shannara Chronicles is cancelled.
