Netflix Picks Up King Arthur Series ‘Cursed’ From Frank Miller & Tom Wheeler

Netflix is heading in the realms of Arthurian legend with Cursed, a new tv show from acclaimed comic book artist/writer Frank Miller and writer/producer Tom Wheeler.

Based on the upcoming book of the same name, ‘Cursed’ is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

“I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story – and by Nimue, in particular,” commented Miller when the book was announced last week. “It can be interpreted in any number of ways – from a delightful children’s story, as in ‘The Sword in the Stone’, to a terrifying interpretation like Excalibur. This tale represents an incredible opportunity and an exciting challenge for me as an illustrator, and I’m excited to collaborate on the story with Thomas Wheeler. I inherited a collection of antique children’s books from my mother, and I’ve always wanted to have a crack at it myself. This project is a dream come true.”

Frank Miller is the acclaimed comic book artist & writer behind graphic novels such as ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, ‘Sin City’, and ‘300’. Tom Wheeler is the writer/producer behind films such as ‘Puss in Boots’, ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ and tv series ‘The Cape’. This is one of those extremely rare occurrences when the people behind the book are not only writing the screen adaptation but are actually writing both projects at the same time.

“I am honoured and humbled to be working with the living legend Frank Miller on Cursed,” adds Wheeler. “I cannot think of a writer-artist who has had a more formative impact on my growth as a storyteller.”

Miller and Wheeler are co-creators and will serve as executive producers of the series. Wheeler is writing the companion book ‘Cursed’, which Miller will illustrate. Cursed will be published by Simon & Schuster in Autumn 2019. No news on exactly when the tv show will drop, although you would assume they are aiming for a similar timescale.
