‘Batwoman’ Series In Development At The CW

We already know that ‘Batwoman’ is coming to the Arrowverse during this year’s crossover event, but it seems she might be more of a permanent fixture moving forward. News has dropped today that the character has her own show in development at The CW from Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions.

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a saviour, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

The show comes from writer/producer Caroline Dries, whose previous work includes ‘The Vampire Diaries’, ‘Melrose Place’ and ‘Smallville’. Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will produce for Berlanti Productions, along with Geoff Johns, former President Of DC Entertainment, through his new company, Mad Ghost Productions.

For those of you not up on your Bat-lore, Batwoman is a character who has been around in the comic books since 1956. The “Silver Age” version of the Bat-family member was Kathy Kane, however, I suspect the version we are more likely to see on tv is the 2006 Kate Kane who first popped up in the brilliant ’52’ run. Kate Kane comes from the other wealthiest family dynasty in Gotham. Kate is openly lesbian, and her former lovers include former Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya (who goes on to become superhero The Question). Inspired by the caped crusader, she fights crime using gear which she stole from her father’s military base.

The show is still in the early stages of development, but casting for the character of Kate Kane/Batwoman is in process as she will be needed for the Arrowverse crossover even in December. The series is currently at the script stage, so may or may not go to pilot. We’ll let you know when we hear more about ‘Batwoman’.
