‘The Crown’ Casts Newcomer Emma Corrin As Lady Diana Spencer

The Crown as found it’s Princess Diana… or rather Lady Diana Spencer as she will be at this point in the series.

‘The Crown’ tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

Emma Corrin has landed the part of Lady Diana Spencer, and will first appear in Season 4. Diana, of course, marries Prince Charles (played by Josh O’Connor – ‘The Durrells’) in 1981, although they did technically first meets in 1977. Season 3 of the show mainly cover the 70s, but it sounds like they have kept the Diana storyline for next season.

“Beyond excited and honoured to be joining The Crown for its fourth season. I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal. Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. To be given the chance to explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice!”

Corrin is probably best known for her guest role in ITV’s ‘Grantchester’. However, in 2019 Emma will go on to star as Esme, a key role in the upcoming 10-part EPIX Batman-adjacent series ‘Pennyworth’. Set in 1960s London, Pennyworth chronicles the early life of former SAS Soldier Alfred Pennyworth – better known as the man who becomes butler to Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. She will also soon to make her debut film appearance as Miss South Africa in ‘Misbehaviour’, a historical drama which follows the story of a group of women from the Women’s Liberation Movement seeking to disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty competition.

“Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer,” adds ‘The Crown’ creator Peter Morgan. “As well as having the innocence and beauty of a young Diana, she also has, in abundance, the range and complexity to portray an extraordinary woman who went from anonymous teenager to becoming the most iconic woman of her generation.”

As you are probably aware by now, ‘The Crown’ has an all-new cast this year as the show switches the actors to people of a more appropriate age every two seasons. Season 3 has Olivia Colman as HRH Queen Elizabeth II, replacing Claire Foy, and Outlander’ star Tobias Menzies replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip. Helena Bonham Carter, takes over the role of HRH Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby, and Ben Daniels (‘The Exorcist’, ‘Rogue One’) will play of 1st Earl of Snowdon, Antony Armstrong-Jones, replacing the outgoing Matthew Goode.

Joining them will be Josh O’Connor (‘The Durrells’) as Prince Charles, Marion Bailey (‘Him & Her’, ‘Mr. Turner’) as the Queen Mother, Erin Doherty (‘Les Misérables’) as Princess Anne, and Emerald Fennell (‘Call The Midwife’) as Camilla Shand/Parker Bowles. Jason Watkins (Trollied’, ‘W1A’) joins the cast this year in the role of Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. Gillian Anderson has also been cast, but for Season 4, playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The Crown‘ Season 3 premieres later this year on Netflix UK and around the world.
