Robert Rodriguez & Peyton Reed Confirmed As Directors For ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2

It might be the day after Star Wars Day, but a couple more bits of news appeared late last night, as Disney raids the Marvel directorial toolbox again for people to helm The Mandalorian Season 2.

Two directors took to Twitter to announce they had been behind the camera for episodes of the next season of the Disney+ Star Wars drama. Peyton Reed, director of Marvel’s ‘Ant-man’ tweeted out a simple shot of Mando’s helmet sat on his director’s chair along with the hashtag #MayThe4thBeWithYou. Whilst Robert Rodriguez, director of ‘Alita: Battle Angel’, and the ‘Sin City’ movies tweeted “I am truly humbled to say I have now had the very rare privilege of directing the biggest star in the universe,” along with a photo of him next to “The Child” (aka merchandising gold mine, Baby Yoda.)

These two new announcements join the previously confirmed directors for ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 which include series creator Jon Favreau, the brilliant Dave Filoni (‘The Clone Wars’, Star Wars Rebels’), and Carl Weathers, who will move behind the camera having played Bounty Hunters’ Guild agent Greef Karga in Season 1. Taika Waititi, who directed the Season 1 finale, has confirmed he did not return to direct for Season 2 due to scheduling conflicts with his new film ‘Next Goal Wins’ about the American Samoa national football team. However, it was announced yesterday he has landed his own feature film set in the Star Wars universe!

On the casting front, the only officially confirmed actor at the moment is Pedro Pascal who will be back as Mando. Although not officially confirmed, it seems likely we will be seeing more of Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon, along with a few other faces from the first season. Regarding new castmembers, the unconfirmed reports include ‘Aliens’ and ‘Terminator’ actor Michael Biehn as a bounty hunter from Mando’s past, and Rosario Dawson (‘Daredevil’), who is believed to have been cast as fan-favourite Jedi, Ahsoka Tano.

Whilst Season 2 doesn’t land until later in the year, yesterday saw the launch of ‘Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian’, an eight-episode documentary series that pulls back the curtain on the first season of ‘The Mandalorian’. Each chapter explores a different facet of the first live-action Star Wars television show through interviews, never-before-seen footage, and roundtable conversations hosted by Favreau.

Assuming all goes to plan, ‘The Mandalorian‘ Season 2 is expected to air Autumn 2020 on Disney+.
