Netflix Abandons ‘GLOW’ Season 4, Now Cancelled After 3 Seasons

Netflix’s wrestling comedy GLOW is the latest to have its fortunes reversed due to the pandemic, as the streaming service abandons the previously renewed 4th Season.

Inspired by the real story of the 1980’s female wrestling league, the series, set in Los Angeles and showcasing big hair and body slams, told the fictionalized story of an out of work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.

“COVID has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show,” commented series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch in a statement to Deadline, who first reported the news. “Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW. We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone. There’s a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again.”

The production was around 3 weeks into shooting the 4th Season (completing one episode) back in March when the COVID pandemic shutdown all filming. As you can imagine with a show about a physical sport such as wrestling, it has been extremely difficult for them to find a safe way to get back into production. Additionally, it’s shot in LA which is still struggling to get up and running, and whilst some shows have found a way back, ‘GLOW’ has a regular cast of over 20 people, many of which would have to be in close contact, making it an extremely high-risk venture right now.

“We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging,” added a Netflix spokesperson. “We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world.”

This is the third show so far which Netflix has ditched due to COVID, as ‘GLOW’ joins ‘The Society’ and ‘I Am Not Okay With This’, which were dropped last month.

All 3 seasons of ‘GLOW‘ can be found on Netflix UK and worldwide.
