NYCC this weekend held a panel highlighting some of the new spin-off series heading to AMC now that the main ‘Walking Dead‘ show is hurtling towards its conclusion. We got some images from the Maggie and Negan spin-off, along with some casting, and also finally got a little bit more about the Daryl Dixon series. Here is all the news from the panel.
The Walking Dead: Dead City
There were no new trailers for the upcoming ‘Walking Dead’ spin-off series, but they did release some “first look” images for ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘, which features Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) heading to Manhattan, NYC.
The six-part series sees Maggie and Negan embark on a secret mission in New York City, where the island of Manhattan is severed from the rest of the world. Whilst the panel didn’t give away much about exactly what or why the duo are there, Morgan promised there are “some horrible people along the way. There’s also some great people along the way.” Also, he mentioned “ziplines”! Cohan adds “it makes it very good to see us together because it is the hardest situation and we both have to be in, and the need is bigger than the fear.”
Joining the two leads are Gaius Charles (‘Friday Night Lights’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’), Karina Ortiz (‘Orange Is the New Black’), Zeljko Ivanek (‘Damages’, ’24’, ‘Madam Secretary’), Mahina Napoleon (‘NCIS: Hawai’i’), and Jonathan Higginbotham (‘Shining Vale’).
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
Moving to ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘ spin-off, we finally got a little bit more about the series (although, not a lot…)
“It’s in France. It’s epic in scale. I mean, it’s f—ing me epic,” said Norman Reedus. “I’ve been on location over there for a bit. I’ve been talking to sound people, photography people, it’s crazy what we’re going to do, I think France is gonna have a heart attack. Which is good, it’s what I want. It has a different look, it has a different feel, has a different sound to it. It has all the things that you like about the show, but [with] new people experiencing them in a different kind of way. It’s something I think we’re all going to love and something that I’m going to be proud of.”
Showrunner and TWD overlord Scott Gimple added “stuff has gone in France… And it’s weird, and we saw some of it in Walking Dead: World Beyond. So Daryl is experiencing things that he hasn’t experienced before in life and with Walkers.”
That last point seems to be a reference to the new walker variant we have seen which appear to faster, and also have figured out how to climb and open doors…
Reedus did also mention “There will be a lot of familiar faces,” so don’t expect Daryl to be on his own…
The Walking Dead Finale
Regarding the main show, Gimple obviously didn’t want to give much away. He did however say “It all comes together… it means that all these characters come to their conclusions, their final forms, you know, they move to their final Pokemon, as it were… We do tell the end of the story of The Walking Dead. Yes, there are these other shows, but this is how everything does come together into what it all meant. When we did 905, which was the last Rick episode when we started that we thought, ‘What did it all mean?’ What did all of this mean from waking up in the hospital to 905, that’s how we approached these last 8 episodes. What did it all mean? How does it all come together? Who do they become?”
‘The Walking Dead‘ is currently airing its finale episodes on Disney+ in the UK. The spin-offs do not yet have a UK broadcaster. If you want to keep track of these or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
