‘Mayans’ Elgin James Working On A ‘Prison Break’ Reboot For Hulu

According to reports, there could be a new ‘Prison Break’ series on the way, helmed by ‘Mayans MC’ boss Elgin James. This would be a totally new chapter for the show, and would likely feature a new cast.

The original series ended in 2009, and starred Dominic Purcell as Lincoln Burrows, a man convicted of a murder he didn’t commit and had been sentenced to death. Wentworth Miller starred as his genius brother, Michael Scofield, who intentionally gets himself arrested to break him out, using maps and information which he has tattooed on his body. In 2017, FOX revived the show for an “event series”, but that would be the end of the road for the show. The duo did reteam again though to play Captain Cold (Miller) and Heat Wave (Purcell) on ‘The Flash’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’.

According to Deadline, who broke the news, the new instalment would be set in the world of ‘Prison Break’, but wouldn’t feature Burrows and Scofield. Whilst it’s always great to see the two of them together on screen, it does rather make sense to go in a new direction given Season 5 wrapped things quite nicely for their characters. However, it would also leave the possibility for some of the original characters to pop up in the new show. This would not be dissimilar to what happened on James’ ‘Mayans MC‘, which was a spin-off from ‘Sons Of Anarchy’.

Elgin James is just coming off the back of a successful 5 season run of ‘Mayans MC‘, which he co-created with SoA’s Kurt Sutter. Janes has a deal with 20th Television (part of Disney Television Studios), who made the original ‘Prison Break’ whilst they were still 20th Century Fox Television. Following the Disney/Fox deal, the license for the show fell to Disney. He also co-created BBC series ‘The Outlaws’ alongside Stephen Merchant. James would executive produce the new series alongside ‘Prison Break’ creator/EP Paul Scheuring and the original show EP’s Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz.

Should this new version of ‘Prison Break’ get picked up, it would air on Hulu in the USA, and likely on Disney+ internationally. Whilst Disney has been in control of the creative output of Hulu for a while, they only recently agreed on a deal with Hulu co-owners Comcast to buy out their remaining shares and take full ownership of the streaming platform.

We should stress, this ‘Prison Break’ series is very much “in development”, so may not move forward. We’ll let you know if we hear more.
