HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ series has recruited its first Green Lantern in the shape of Aaron Pierre as the much-loved John Stewart.
Based on DC’s Green Lantern comic books, the series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Pierre currently stars as the lead in Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge” which debuted on Netflix on September 6th and was the #1 title worldwide on Netflix for three weeks in a row. In December, Aaron will take on the titular role of Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ animated “Lion King” prequel for Disney. This also isn’t his first time playing a DC character, having previously appeared in the short-lived ‘Krypton’ series as “Dev-Em”.
There’s still officially no news on who will fill the suit of the legendary Hal Jordan, however, it has been reported that veteran actor Kyle Chandler (Bloodline, Mayor of Kingstown, Friday Night Lights) is circling the role.
The series is co-written by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers) and excellent comicbook writer Tom King. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes (Doctor Who, Slow Horses, Black Mirror). The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, King and Hawes. Based on the DC comic “Green Lantern.”
As to where you’ll be able to watch ‘Lanterns’ in the UK… That is a little tricky at this point… Currently, Sky has a deal with Warner Bros Discovery for content on HBO. However, that deal ends at the end of 2025, and WBD are intent on launching the Max streaming service in the UK in 2026. There is also the issue that Sky is currently suing WBD over breaches in their co-producing contract, which may complicate matters… Assuming that doesn’t hold things up, it is likely ‘Lanterns’ will end up on Max when it launches in the UK, but we’ll let you know closer to its release.
If you want to keep track of ‘Lanterns‘ or any other show, add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
