Prime Video streaming channel MGM+ has set a January UK premiere date for ‘Earth Abides‘, a limited series adaptation of the novel by George R. Stewart, starring Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, Heels), and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark, Jessica Jones).
When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.
Ludwig plays “Ish,” a brilliant but solitary young geologist living a semi-isolated life who awakens from a coma only to find that no one is left alive but him. A plague of unprecedented virulence has swept the globe, and yes, there are a few scattered survivors, but there are no rules. His journey is to learn the difference between sanctuary and survival and to open his heart to love if he is to find meaning in his life after the great machine of civilization has broken down.
Dukes plays Emma, the polar opposite of Ish. Fearless in body and mind, she is the heartbeat of the new world they set out to build. Loss has taught her two things: that life and pain are forever intertwined and that, in the end, we are not defined by what we have acquired but rather by what we have given away.
The cast also includes Aaron Tveit (Schmigadoon!, Gossip Girl), Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll (Son of a Critch), Elyse Levesque (The Originals), Hilary McCormack (Richard III), Luisa D’Oliveira (The 100), Birkett Turton (Family Law, iZombie), and Jenna Berman (The 100, Blockbuster).
Oscar-winner Michael Phillips (The Sting) serves as writer, showrunner and exec producer. Juliana Maio and Kearie Peak also exec produce. Additional writers include Karen Janszen, Tony Spiridakis, Evan Hart, and Kyle Stephen. Bronwen Hughes directs Episodes One and Two. Rachel Leiterman directs Episodes Three and Four, and Stephen Campanelli directs Episodes Five and Six.
‘Earth Abides‘ premieres Sunday, 11th January 2025 on Prime Video channel MGM+ in the UK.
