Despite saying ‘The Trip‘ to Greece would be their last outing, it appears Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are getting back on the road for a new season of Michael Winterbottom’s pseudo-reality comedy.
The series sees Steve and Rob play fictional versions of themselves as they embark on road trips around various countries on a restaurant tour, searching for fresh helpings of gastronomic adventures. So far the duo have travelled the UK, Italy, Spain and Greece.
The new season hasn’t yet been officially announced but came to light due to Steve Coogan getting caught doing 97mph on the M6 near Telford in July last year… In an effort to avoid getting a driving ban, Coogan sent a letter to Birmingham magistrates court stating that he is due to start filming a new season of ‘The Trip’ this Summer, and (as the title of the show suggests) the series involves him needing to be able to drive.
Coogan’s letter said that the project “would be severely impacted, not only affecting my own livelihood but also the many individuals dependent on these productions for work. These include camera, sound, and lighting technicians, riggers, and others on modest wages who would face cancellations and financial hardship, as rescheduling such projects is often highly complicated.”
Given that a disqualification would not only have affected him, but potentially shut down the entire production putting hundreds of people out of work, the court relented, giving him five penalty points (one short of a ban, as he already had points from a previous offence), and ordering him to pay a £3,590 fine and costs. Whilst some may see this as a rich person “getting away with it”, it’s actually not uncommon for a UK magistrates court to stop short of a ban for this sort of speeding offence, if a ban would affect the livelihood of the accused, or other people in their business.
‘The Trip’ originally began on the BBC back in 2010 where it ran for two seasons before being moved to Sky for another two seasons. Sky has not confirmed if they will be airing this fifth season, or if it has moved broadcasters once again. It also isn’t clear if Michael Winterbottom will be behind the camera again.
‘The Trip‘ Season 5 does not currently have a premiere date but if you want to keep track of this or any other show, add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
