The BBC has announced that ‘Doctor Who‘ will return this April as the set a premiere date for Ncuti Gatwa‘s second full season at the helm of the TARDIS.
In his latest adventures in time and space, the Fifteenth Doctor is joined by Varada Sethu as new companion Belinda Chandra, alongside Millie Gibson who returns as Ruby Sunday. When the Doctor first meets Belinda, it begins an epic quest to get her back to Earth. But a mysterious force is stopping their return and the time-travelling TARDIS team must face great dangers, ferocious enemies and wilder terrors than ever before.
This season also features anti-gravity explorers, flying saucers and real-life cartoon characters climbing out of cinema screens… Once again, the Doctor is facing new threats and troubles, across new alien worlds, universes and, of course, planet Earth. And there are more people to save, including terrified cinema-goers and people literally clinging on for their lives in zero mavity. From space battles to whirling time vortexes, there’s a whole universe of trouble out there…
Other people we know are returning include Anita Dobson as the mysterious “Mrs Flood”, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham, alongside the rest of UNIT.
New faces this season include Archie Panjabi (Snowpiercer, Departure, Blindspot) who is taking a villain role, Rose Ayling-Ellis (EastEnders) has been cast in an undisclosed role, and the latest announcement, ‘Slow Horses’ actor Christopher Chung as a character called “Cassio”.
There are also new people behind the camera this season, with Juno Dawson, Inua Ellams, Pete McTighe, and Sharma Angel-Walfall taking up writing duties.
What is slightly odd is how the date was announced… An ad for the new season randomly popped up in the middle of a break in the Under 20s Six Nations Rugby tournament on the BBC, but hadn’t (and still hasn’t at time of posting) been posted on any official BBC social media or the BBC website… There also hasn’t been any coordinated announcement as yet about the international broadcast on Disney+, which is strange. However, it has been verified that the ad did air during the game. So, it’s not clear whether someone at the BBC clicked the wrong button or selected the wrong ad feed and is currently been yelled at by their boss, or if this is some strange ad strategy by the BBC, but it does appear to be genuine.
Bad Wolf produces the series with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television. Russell T Davies is showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers are Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter.
‘Doctor Who‘ Season 2 will premiere Saturday, 12th April 2025 on BBC iPlayer and BBC One. The show airs on Disney+ internationally.
