Disney’s US network ABC handed out a bunch of renewals this afternoon, including ‘9-1-1‘, ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘, ‘The Rookie‘, ‘Will Trent‘, and more, although one newer series was curiously missing.
The ‘9-1-1’ renewal, which lands it a 9th Season of 18 episodes, was largely expected, given they recently announced a new spin-off, ‘9-1-1: Nashville‘, led by former ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ star, Chris O’Donnell. The renewal for a 22nd season for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is also no great shock as it extends its title as the longest-running medical drama in US history. ‘The Rookie’ lands an 8th Season (we’re still waiting on Season 7 in the UK, which is expected to land later this year on Sky Witness…), and has been performing well for Disney, both on broadcast and streaming on Hulu. And ‘Will Trent’ gets at 4th Season as the “thank you” for drawing the second largest audience on ABC behind ‘High Potential’, which was renewed for a 2nd Season back in January, along with fan-favorite ‘Abbott Elementary’.
ABC has also announced a 2nd Season for the Tim Allen/Kat Dennings father/daughter comedy ‘Shifting Gears‘, which has yet to air in the UK, but is the third largest comedy on broadcast in the USA, sat behind CBS shows ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ and ‘Ghosts’. That stars Allen as Matt, the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop, but when Matt’s estranged daughter (Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.
That pretty much wraps up ABC’s comedy and drama renewal for this season, with one exception…
Ryan Murphy’s latest drama, ‘Doctor Odyssey’, has not yet been handed a renewal or cancellation. The medical drama, set on a cruise ship and led by Joshua Jackson, has done… okay… in its time slot, but possibly not as well as it needed to. Averaging around 4.9 million viewers per week, that is only retaining about 77% of the audience from ‘9-1-1’, Murphy’s other show, which precedes it on the ABC schedule. Not terrible, but not stellar either. ABC are apparently still discussing options with the team behind it, so the Odyssey may not be sunk yet. We’ll just have to wait a little longer to see if it’s heading for an iceberg or not.
‘9-1-1‘, ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘, ‘Will Trent‘ and ‘Doctor Odyssey‘ are all airing their latest seasons on Disney+ in the UK right now. ‘The Rookie‘ (which is made by Lionsgate Television, not Disney, which is why it’s not on Disney+ here), airs on Sky Witness, and we’re expecting it to land at some point in Summer 2025… If you want to keep track of these or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
