Gray returns from hiatus to join Dave to chat TV & Film!

by Dave Elliott

This week on the Geektown Radio podcast, Gray makes his grand return after a three-month break. That time included work, illness, and a two-week camping trip completely off the TV grid. No streaming. No catch-up. No “just one episode before bed.” Now back in civilisation, he has been catching up hard and joins Dave to share reviews of the shows he has loved, and a few he did not, along with all the latest TV news and upcoming highlights.

This Week’s Featured Reviews

‘Stick’ (Apple TV+) – Gray’s surprise hit of the summer. A golf dramedy starring Owen Wilson (Loki) as a former pro mentoring a teenage prodigy. Heart, humour, and a little heartbreak. You do not need to know a bogey from a birdie to enjoy it.

‘Destination X’ (BBC) – A reality competition that puts blindfolded contestants on a bus and sends them across Europe, guessing their location via cryptic clues. Gray loves the interactivity, as viewers can play along online, but thinks it deserved an autumn launch. Host Rob Brydon keeps the ride entertaining.

‘Twisted Metal’ Season 2 (Paramount+) – Dave is back in the wasteland with Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) for another round of car chaos. It is bigger, funnier, and bloodier than Season 1, with Will Arnett voicing the killer clown Sweet Tooth.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ (MGM+) – Prequel to Outlander exploring the love stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents, complete with time-travel twists. Highland clan politics dominate episode one. Episode two gets into the timey-wimey drama fans expect.

More From Gray & Dave’s Watchlists

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ – Gray enjoyed this as a strong MCU reset but wanted more action and a clearer tie-in to the wider Marvel universe.
  • ‘The Bear’ Season 4 – His favourite season yet, with brilliant turns from Ayo Edebiri (Bottoms) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Andor).
  • ‘Bookish’ – BBC post-war crime drama that stumbles early but really finds its rhythm from episode three onward.
  • ‘Foundation’ – Dave continues to be in awe of Apple TV+’s epic, time-spanning sci-fi, calling it one of the few truly “hard sci-fi” series on TV right now.
  • ‘Ghosts US’ – Both agree it has carved out its own identity while keeping the charm of the UK original, thanks to inventive ghost powers and new characters.
  • ‘Scandal’ – Dave is midway through season two and loving the political twists. Gray remembers the whole run fondly and still rates it as peak Shondaland melodrama.
  • ’99 to Beat’ – ITV’s quirky game show, now cancelled, where contestants played bizarre challenges like rolling Henry Hoovers and wrangling tape measures. Both baffled as to why it has gone.

News This Week

  • The Paramount–Skydance merger is complete, which could mean changes for Paramount+, Channel 5, and Star Trek.
  • Disney+ is replacing the Star hub with Hulu internationally.
  • Netflix renewals for ‘One Piece’ and ‘My Life With The Walter Boys’.
  • Cancellations for ‘Goosebumps’, ‘Annika’, and ITV quiz show 99 to Beat.
  • New projects include Amazon’s ‘Wolfenstein’ series, CBS legal drama ‘Cupertino’, and Netflix’s potential ‘T.J. Hooker’ movie.

  • ‘Butterfly’ – Tuesday, 13th August on Prime Video.
  • ‘Brokenwood Mysteries’ Season 11 – Sunday, 18th August on U&Drama.
