Charlie Brooker Unveils Darkly Comic Crime Thriller With Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell & Lena Headey

by Dave Elliott

Charlie Brooker, the Emmy-winning mischief-maker behind Black Mirror, is leaving behind rogue algorithms and dystopian tech nightmares in favour of something a little more old-school… murder. His new four-part crime thriller, which is now in production, promises ritualistic killings, haunted detectives, and at least a few smirks tucked between the shadows.

The untitled series is set between the fictional northern city of Bleakford and the murky sprawl of London. At its core is a tormented detective on a relentless hunt for a ritualistic serial killer. It’s described as “profoundly serious”, which, in Brooker-speak, likely means it will be serious until it isn’t, with just enough bite and satire to keep audiences second-guessing their own reactions.

Front and centre is a cast that could headline three separate prestige dramas on their own. Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon, MobLand) steps into the detective role, bringing his trademark intensity. He’ll be joined by Georgina Campbell (Barbarian, The Watchers), who’s made a name for herself in genre-bending thrillers, and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, The Abandons), no stranger to commanding screen presence. Together, they form a trio that screams gravitas while still leaving room for Brooker’s signature twist of the knife.

And then there’s Brooker himself, gleefully mocking the very idea of being earnest about his own show:

“I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release,” Brooker told Netflix. “I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it. I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”

Behind the camera, the production is stacked with familiar names. Brooker leads the writing team, joined by Ben Caudell (Cunk on Earth), Jason Hazeley (Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe), Emer Kenny (Karen Pirie), Daniel Maier (Harry Hill’s TV Burp), and Joel Morris (That Mitchell and Webb Look), with additional material from Victoria Asare Archer (Breeders). That line-up alone guarantees a blend of razor-sharp wit and unnervingly bleak plotting.

Executive producers include Jessica Rhoades (Station Eleven) and Annabel Jones (Black Mirror), with Mark Kinsella as co-executive producer and Richard Webb serving as producer. Together, they make up a creative team that knows exactly how to mix prestige drama with satirical subversion.

Netflix, the home of Brooker’s previous small-screen nightmares, will be bringing the show to audiences worldwide. While the streamer is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to release dates, Brooker has already teased “blood and frowning” in abundance. Given his track record, expect more than that — probably something that skewers the very nature of the true-crime boom while delivering the kind of compulsive binge-watch that Netflix lives for.

‘Untitled Charlie Brooker Crime Thriller’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Netflix in the UK.
