We’re back with another episode of the Geektown Radio podcast, and this week is a special one! Joining Dave as guest co-host is Theo Mayne, who fans will know from Season 1 of the hugely popular BBC reality series The Traitors. Theo sticks around for the whole show as we chat through medical dramas, superhero spinoffs, haunted horrors, and his time in Claudia Winkleman’s castle of lies. Plus we round up the latest news, renewals, cancellations, and UK TV highlights.
What We’ve Been Watching
Theo has been binging 9-1-1 on Disney+, praising Angela Bassett’s powerhouse performance, and revisited The Conjuring: Last Rites, which he loved for its twist and its emotional family focus. He also caught up with The Boys and was blown away by Antony Starr’s terrifying turn as Homelander. Meanwhile, Dave checked out new medical drama ‘Doc’, tested out High Potential Season 2, and dived into the return of ‘Gen V’ on Prime Video.
But the big four this week are…
Doc
The new US medical drama ‘Doc’ follows chief of medicine Dr. Amy Elias, played by Molly Parker, whose life changes after a car accident leaves her with no memory of the last eight years. Suddenly, she’s dealing with a divorce she doesn’t remember, the loss of a child she can’t recall, and a daughter who has grown up without her. Dave found it an intriguing twist on the usual hospital drama format, with plenty of scope for procedural cases alongside the emotional fallout of Amy’s memory loss. Now airing weekly on Sky, this one’s worth a look if you like character-driven medical shows.
Gen V
Prime Video’s ‘Gen V’ is back for Season 2, picking up the story of young supes training at Godolkin University. This darker take on the superhero world follows fresh faces as they’re corrupted by Vought’s system while trying to uncover sinister experiments on campus. The season has also had to navigate the tragic loss of actor Chance Perdomo, which the writers incorporated into the storyline with surprising sensitivity. Dave praised the opening episodes for delivering the same mix of gore, satire, and social commentary that makes The Boys such a hit. If you’ve finished The Boys, this is the perfect next step.
The Conjuring: Last Rites
Theo, a big horror fan, was delighted by ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’, supposedly the final chapter in the mainline series. He rated it highly for its passionate story, the involvement of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s daughter, and the way it tied into spin-offs like Annabelle and The Nun. While it may not be the scariest entry, Theo felt it gave a strong emotional conclusion to the Warrens’ saga and called it an easy 8/10. Of course, horror finales are rarely final, but if this is the end, it’s one he thoroughly enjoyed.
The Traitors (with Theo Mayne)
The real treat this week is chatting with Theo about his time on The Traitors Season 1. He made it nine episodes into the series as a Faithful, and shares what it was like stepping into the castle with no idea what the game would become. From applying on a whim to surviving Claudia Winkleman’s (or rather, the producer’s) plotting, Theo talks candidly about the mental challenge, why being yourself is the best strategy, and how the show’s diverse casting helped make it such a phenomenon. We also look ahead to the first celebrity edition, which arrives this October, and Theo reveals who he thinks will shine, with Alan Carr tipped to be hilarious, and Cat Burns a personal favourite to watch. With Season 4 expected in January and Season 5 already confirmed, it’s the perfect moment to revisit the show that gripped the nation.
TV News
In the news this week: Silence is Golden cancelled by UKTV, Growing Pains ends after six seasons, and Jimmy Kimmel suspended indefinitely in the US (although, reinstated just after we recorded the show!). On the renewal side, We Were Liars returns for Season 2 at Prime, The Morning Show renewed for Season 5, Daredevil: Born Again locked for a third season at Disney+, and Tulsa King picked up for Season 4 with Samuel L. Jackson joining the cast. And of course, The Traitors confirmed for a fifth season, with applications now open.
