In the 1980s, a tabletop game about imagination, maths, and rolling dice somehow became a national moral threat.
In Geekstorians Episode 7, ‘D&D & The Satanic Panic’, the series explores how Dungeons & Dragons was swept up in one of the strangest cultural panics of the late 20th century. A period when fantasy roleplaying was accused of corrupting minds, summoning demons, and leading teenagers into real-world danger.
This episode traces how a mix of media hysteria, tragic misunderstandings, and fear of youth culture transformed a collaborative storytelling game into a convenient villain. From sensational headlines and talk shows to concerned parents and self-appointed “experts”, D&D became a symbol for anxieties that had very little to do with the game itself.
It’s also a story about how panic spreads. How speculation hardens into belief, how fiction gets mistaken for fact, and how repetition can turn rumour into something that feels like truth. Long before social media, the Satanic Panic showed how quickly misinformation could travel when fear was more compelling than evidence.
But while the noise grew louder, the reality at the table told a very different story. For players, D&D was about friendship, creativity, problem-solving, and belonging. A space for imagination, collaboration, and escape, at odds with the dark caricature presented on television screens.
As with the rest of Geekstorians, this isn’t about mocking the past or relitigating old arguments. It’s a cultural history of how fear attaches itself to new media, and how fandoms endure when they’re misunderstood.
