Richard Dormer Returns for ‘Blue Lights’ Series Four as Gerry Cliff

by Dave Elliott

Blue Lights is bringing back a familiar face for its fourth run, with Richard Dormer confirmed to reprise his role as Gerry Cliff in the BBC’s BAFTA and RTS award-winning Belfast-set police drama.

Dormer’s return sees him step back into a character whose shadow has loomed large over the series since its early days. Gerry Cliff was a central figure in series one, and his reappearance in the new run signals that some long-buried threads are about to be pulled sharply back into focus.

The six-episode, hour-long series will also see the return of Hannah McClean as solicitor Jen Robinson and Jonathan Harden as disgraced former inspector Jonty. Their involvement ties directly into an episode that promises to answer lingering questions from the past.

Series co-creators and writers Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson say the new run digs deep into the moral and emotional cost of policing in Belfast today, weaving together the past, present and future of Grace, Annie and Tommy in what they describe as an action-packed story.

From a story perspective, series four jumps forward three years. Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster and Annie Conlon are now experienced response officers, pushed to their limits by a dangerous new threat on the streets. At the same time, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff exposes a long-hidden secret that sends shockwaves through both the police and the criminal underworld. As pressure mounts, each of them is forced to confront hard truths about their future and themselves.

The returning main cast includes Siân Brooke as Grace Ellis, Martin McCann as Stevie Niell, Katherine Devlin as Annie Conlon and Nathan Braniff as Tommy Foster, alongside Joanne Crawford, Andi Osho, Frank Blake, Abigail McGibbon, Dearbháile McKinney and Andrea Irvine. Also returning are Cathy Tyson as Dana Morgan and Michael Smiley as intelligence officer Paul ‘Colly’ Collins.

Behind the camera, series four is produced by Two Cities Television and Gallagher Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with global sales handled by BBC Studios. Episodes one to three are directed by Angela Griffin, with episodes four to six helmed by Sam O’Mahoney.

Blue Lights’ Season 4 does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK. If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
