BBC Unveils Arctic First Look At ‘Vigil’ Series 3

by Dave Elliott

The BBC has revealed first-look images from the upcoming third series of Vigil, with Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) returning as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre. The six-part drama is set to land on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year, and this time it is heading somewhere much colder.

Filming has wrapped in Svalbard and Scotland, with the new series taking Silva and Longacre to a remote Arctic research station. The case begins when a member of a covert British special forces mission is shot dead, pulling the detectives into a dangerous investigation against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions and a scramble for energy and resources in a rapidly changing polar climate. It sounds chilly in more ways than one.

The newly released images show Amy and Kirsten trekking across snow-covered terrain armed with rifles, standing in courtrooms, and facing off in interrogation rooms. There is also a sense that the stakes are rising both professionally and personally, with their careers and relationship on the line as they attempt to prevent an international confrontation.

Returning cast includes Gary Lewis (Outlander) as DS Robertson and Dominic Mafham (The Serpent Queen) as Sir Ian Downing. New additions to the series feature Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Trip), Steven Miller (Shetland), Naomi Yang (Wolfe), Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia: The Next Chapter), Tornike Gogrichiani (Extraction 2) and Danusia Samal (The Great).

Further cast joining the icy drama include Artur Zai Barrera (The Old Man), Jordan Duvigneau (Mood), Kaisa Hammarlund (Hijack), Adam Fidusiewicz (A Gentleman in Moscow), Eric Godon (In Bruges), Conor Berry (Karen Pirie), Amy Manson (Bodies), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Steven Cree (Outlander), Killian Coyle (Endeavour), Derek Riddell (Happy Valley), Alma Prelec (Fifteen Love), Dawn Sievewright (Shetland) and Shereen Cutkelvin (Crime).

Originally premiering in 2021, the first series of ‘Vigil’ followed Silva investigating a murder aboard a Royal Navy submarine. It went on to become one of the BBC’s biggest drama hits of the decade, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Drama Series and winning the International Emmy for Best Drama Series. Series two, which aired in 2023 and centred on a deadly drone attack, launched to nearly nine million viewers and ranked among the BBC’s top three most-watched dramas of that year.

Series three of Vigil does not yet have a premiere date but will air on BBC One in the UK.
